Boatwright Explodes for Career-High 28 Points to Lead Skyhawks Past Cougars

DURANGO, Colo. – Less than a month removed from his previous career-high of 22 points against UC-Colorado Springs, redshirt freshman Brenden Boatwright was on fire all game long Friday night against Colorado Christian. Boatwright not only set a career-high in points with 28 but went 9-9 from the field and 10-11 from the free throw line in leading the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to an 81-72 victory over Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Whalen Gym.

It didn't matter who covered Boatwright, as he was scoring against multiple defenders and several different post players, nearly fouling out two separate players in the process. In just 20 minutes of work Boatwright piled up his 28 points and also six rebounds and an assist.

When he wasn't doing all the damage, Marquel Beasley was as he added 19 points on 7-10 shooting, along with six rebounds, a block and a steal. Alex Semadeni with 11 points and Will Wittman with 10 rounded out the four that scored in double-figures.

FLC (10-12, 5-11 RMAC) shot well from the field making 26-48 (54) from the field, 5-14 (36) from three and used a huge at the foul line going 24-35 (69), as Colorado Christian (6-16, 4-12 RMAC) attempted just six foul shots, making five (83).

Out of the gate, Wittman hit a layup 42 seconds in and then a Keven Biggs three-pointer had the Skyhawks out to a 5-2 lead. Beasley added a jumper on the next trip down to jump the lead to five.

After the Cougars grabbed a 10-9 lead, FLC unleashed a 7-0 run with Boatwright starting his big night with a layup. Wittman added a layup and then AJ Sparks closed the run with a triple at the 13:16 mark for a 16-10 lead.

With the lead down to three, a layup by Boatwright started a 9-0 run to push the lead into double-digits. Sparks added a jumper and then it was all Boatwright inside again as he continually muscled inside for layup after layup, hitting a jumper that he was also fouled on. After hitting the foul shot, he closed the run with a layup off his own defensive rebound for the 27-15 lead near the midway point of the first half.

CCU got back to within two when the Skyhawks closed the half strong with Boatwright hitting a layup and then two foul shots before a three-pointer by Kireed Johnson and right before the half, fittingly, Boatwright closed the scoring with a jumper to give FLC a 44-32 lead at the break.

Boatwright had a first half to remember with 19 points in 11 minutes, going 7-7 from the field and 5-5 at the foul line, along with five rebounds.

A Semadeni corner three and a Beasley jumper early in the second half stretched the lead out to 13 and following a Semadeni jumper had the lead out to 14, the Cougars made one last run.

Over the next several minutes, CCU went on a 19-7 run to cut the deficit down to just two at 62-60 following a layup by Braxton Tucker at the 8:11 mark.

FLC responded to start pulling away for the win as Beasley collected a big offensive rebound and put back to jump the lead back to four. After the Cougars answered to get back to within two, a jumper by Beasley and then two foul shots by Beasley pushed the lead to six with 4:23 to play.

As the defensive continued to stuff CCU, Boatwright went back inside again for another two to move the lead to eight with four to play. After Boatwright would hit three from the line, the lead was out to 11 and with just two minutes to play, FLC would go on to take the 81-72 victory.

In addition to the big advantage at the foul line, FLC also held the edge on second-chance points (14-2), bench points (37-8), and points in the paint (32-24). Neither team had a fastbreak point.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Cougars with Tucker leading the way with 23 points, he also added seven rebounds. Justin Engesser and Jeremiah Hanson added 13 points apiece. CCU went 28-63 (44) from the field, and 11-28 (39) from three.

FLC will remain at home tomorrow (Saturday) night for the White Out game against Regis starting at 7:30 p.m. Adams State defeated the Rangers 78-70 earlier on Friday night in Alamosa.
