Candelaria and Carter Combine for 20 Points Against Colorado Christian

DURANGO, Colo. – Sydney Candelaria and Jordan Carter each went for 10 points apiece, while Alyssa Yocky just missed a double-double with seven points and 11 rebounds for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team Friday night. Colorado Christian used a big second half to comeback and defeat the Skyhawks 59-48 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Whalen Gym.

FLC (9-13, 5-11 RMAC) had the start they were looking for and had their largest lead of the game early in the third quarter when they pulled ahead by seven. CCU (10-12, 8-8 RMAC) then went on to outscore the Skyhawks by 18 the remainder of the game to pull off the rally and comeback victory.

The Skyhawks grabbed their first lead nearly three minutes in when Candelaria hit a three-pointer. She then followed that up with a steal and coast-to-coast layup for the 7-4 lead. After the Cougars tied it up, Candelaria hit another layup and Kayla Herrera sunk a trey to push the lead to five midway through the quarter.

In a game that was full of runs, CCU came back with a 5-0 run to tie the game and then a three-pointer off the wing by MorningRose Tobey near the end of the opening quarter gave FLC a 15-12 lead entering the second frame.

Aubre Fortner scored eight seconds into the second quarter to jump the lead to five at 17-12. CCU answered with a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 18-17. Kaitlyn Romero snapped the run with a quick catch and shoot three-point to jump back in front 20-18.

The run continued when Yocky collected and offensive rebound and put back and then hit two from the line to stretch the lead to six at 24-18.
The Cougars had another run ready, as they came back with a 9-0 run to take a 27-24 lead with two minutes to play in the half. A Candelaria free throw and a Yocky three-pointer closed the scoring in the first half and left the Skyhawks with a 28-27 lead at the break.

FLC continued the run right into the second half with Jordan Carter scoring three straight baskets within a one minute window to push the lead to seven at 34-27.

Just when it looked like the Skyhawks were in control, CCU came back with an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 35-34. After Carter snapped the run with a layup to give FLC a one-point lead, the Cougars went on 7-2 run to close the quarter with Hanna Valencia scoring a layup right at the buzzer leaving CCU with the 42-38 leading entering the final frame.

Both teams struggled to find traction in the fourth quarter, as a layup by Madison Price moved the Cougars out to a six-point lead and would be the only basket over the first four minutes of the frame before a layup by Davenport Brantley had the Cougars out to an eight-point lead with 5:52 remaining.

Herrera got the first points for FLC in the fourth quarter when she hit a mid-range jumper at the 5:37 mark. Candelaria had the deficit back to four when Candelaria hit a layup on the next trip down the floor.

CCU went on a 5-0 run to go back in front by nine, but the Skyhawks kept fighting with Herrera ending the run with a layup with 3:30 to play. The Cougars, though, answered back with an 8-0 run to put the game out of the reach on their way to claiming the 59-48 victory.

Candelaria went 4-10 from the field, 1-2 from three and added three rebounds and a steal for her 10 points. Carter went 5-7 from the field, along with two rebounds for her 10 points. Yocky and Herrera added seven points apiece. FLC went 19-59 (32) from the field, 5-19 (26) from three and 5-6 (83) at the foul line.

Jordan Baer had a big game for the Cougars as she led the way in points with 14, in rebounds with 14, in assists with five and also had a block and a steal in 37 minutes. Price also reached double-figures with 12 points.  CCU went 24-56 (43) from the field, 5-15 (33) from three and 6-10 (67) from the foul line.

FLC will remain at home tomorrow (Saturday) for the White Out game against Regis starting at 5:30 p.m. The Rangers rolled to a 93-57 win earlier Friday night at Adams State.
