Yocky Adds Another Double-Double on Senior Night as Skyhawks Fly Past Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – It was only fitting that on senior night Alyssa Yocky would record her eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds to help lead the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team to a 73-54 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Adams State Friday night inside Whalen Gym.

While Yocky tallied a double-double going 6-11 from the field, 2-4 from three, she also had four steals in 36 minutes in her final game as a Skyhawks. Fellow senior MorningRose Tobey added seven points.

Yocky led four Skyhawks in double-figures as Aubre Fortner added 12 points, Tanisha Begay with 11 and Sydney Candelaria added 10.

After trailing by two after the first quarter, FLC (13-15, 9-13 RMAC) outscored Adams State (2-24, 2-20 RMAC) 63-42 the rest of the game.

The Grizzlies opened the game strong hitting a pair of three-pointers by Sentreal Gregory to take the early 6-0 lead two minutes in. Tobey got FLC on the board at the 7:30 mark with a layup.

Still down by four, a Yocky three and then another long ball from Kayla Herrera gave FLC their first lead of the game at 10-8 with 3:38 to play in the opening quarter. Adams State closed the final few minutes on a 4-0 run to take the 12-10 lead through the first 10 minutes.

With the teams trading leads over the first few minutes of the second quarter, a Begay three-pointer moved the Skyhawks back ahead for good the rest of the half. Fortner added a jumper and then a Jordan Carter jumper in the paint had the Skyhawks holding a 22-17 lead. The teams would each score 10 points the remainder of the half to leave FLC with the 32-27 halftime advantage.

The Grizzlies kept pushing, fighting back to tie the game at 38 at the 5:26 mark of the third quarter. After that, it was all Skyhawks. Following a free throw by Fortner, a tough offensive rebound turned into a three-point-play for Abigail Jensen as she converted the shot and free throw to move FLC out to the 42-38 lead.
With the lead as high as nine, the Skyhawks held a 51-43 lead heading into the final quarter after Fortner hit two from the line.

The seniors started the final quarter off right with Tobey hitting a layup and then Yocky converted a three-point-play to push the lead out to 56-43.

Following one last push by the Grizzlies to get to within seven near the midway point of the quarter, Candelaria answered with a three to start a 13-0 run.

Candelaria added a layup, Yocky drilled a jumper, Herrera added a jumper and after a layup by Fortner, Yocky's jumper in the paint ended the run and had FLC looking at a 71-51 lead with just a couple of minutes to play and ended up taking the 73-54 victory.

FLC went 26-67 (39) from the field, 8-30 (27) from three and 13-17 (77) at the foul line. The Skyhawks forced 17 turnovers and turned that into a 14-8 points off turnovers advantage. They also held the edge on second-chance points (13-5), bench points (24-15) and points in the paint (32-14).

Gregory led Adams State with 13 points, while Stephanie Ruiz added 12. The Grizzlies went 18-53 (34) from the field, 9-20 (45) from three and 9-10 (90) at the foul line.

FLC finishes the 2018-19 season with an 8-6 record inside Whalen Gym and won the final two games of the regular season. It's the 18th straight season the Skyhawks have won at least double-digit games in a season.
