Offense, Complete Game Effort From Decker Leads Softball to Split Against Black Hills State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Kelly Decker tossed a complete game win and the Fort Lewis College softball team piled up 12 runs to take game one in five innings, 12-2, against Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets fought back to win game two, 5-4, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday.

The games were played in Alamosa at the Adams State University Softball Field due to unplayable conditions of both Aspen Field and the Aztec Tiger Softball Complex.

After BHSU (8-11, 5-6 RMAC) opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning of game one, Decker would go on to shutout the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way and the FLC (7-20, 2-12 RMAC) offense went to work.

In the home half of the first inning, Allison Young started things with a double to left and after Taylor Hollestelle singled to put runners at the corner, Hollestelle would steal second just before Angelique Elemen ripped a single to right to plate Young. McKenna Hefley then lifted a fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly that was misplayed by the centerfielder to allow the run to score and McKenna reached first base. After an out, Kylie Hefley smashed a double to left-center to bring in both McKenna Hefley and Elemen to give the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead after one.

The offense really got things going in the second with Young being hit-by-pitch and Hollestelle singling, before a five-pitch walk to Elemen loaded the bases. McKenna Hefley hit a solid single to right-center to plate Young with the first run of the inning. Hunter Garcia battled and worked a full-count walk to bring in Hollestelle. Kylie Hefley singled just off the glove of the third baseman to keep the hits and the runs coming. After Pilar Gutierrez reached on a fielding error by the left fielder for another sacrifice fly, Julia Roberts cracked a double to deep right-center to score a pair of runs. A pitching change followed, but FLC kept the runs coming as Hannah Gondini hit on to shortstop that was thrown away and then a groundout to second by Young brought in the eighth run of the inning and left FLC with the commanding 12-2 lead after two.

Decker then worked around a pair of singles in the fifth inning to give the Skyhawks a run-rule 12-2 win after five innings.

FLC held a 9-5 edge on hits, while BHSU committed three of the four errors. Seven Skyhawks had at least a hit with both Hollestelle and Kylie Hefley tallying two hits apiece. Kylie Hefley had three RBI and both McKenna Hefley and Roberts drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Decker picked up the win (1-8) after going all five innings and allowed just one earned run with one strikeout and no walks.

Samantha Schoen had two hits to lead Black Hills State, while in the circle, Alex Wiley ended up with the loss (3-5) after pitching the first 1.1 innings and allowing nine earned runs. Darian Gottfried went the final 2.2 innings and didn't allow a run.

The second game was a defensive struggle over the first two innings with both Kassidy Trumbo and Crystal Amaral keeping the game scoreless.

In the third with two outs, Hollestelle and Elemen launched back-to-back doubles to deep left to put FLC on the board first at 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets answered in the fourth with two runs on three hits, along with an error to jump in front, 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Skyhawks reclaimed the lead as the frame started with a bang when McKenna Hefley tripled down into the right field corner. Gutierrez wasted little time bringing her home when she doubled to left-center to tie the game at two. After an out, Roberts hit a perfect shot down the left field line that kept rolling and rolling. In the process she kept rounding the bases and ended up turning the play into an inside-the-park home run to also score Gutierrez for the 4-2 lead after four.

Everything looked good into the sixth when Black Hills State put together their own two-out rally. With a runner on first and two outs, a single and then a double to center just over the glove of Young brought in two runs to tie the game at four. Right after the double, a single followed just over the head of Gutierrez at second to bring in the fifth run of the game and move the Yellow Jackets out to a 5-4 lead.

FLC still had a few chances to tie or take the lead and in the sixth, McKenna Hefley singled and after two outs were recorded, Roberts singled to shortstop and Gondini hit one up the middle to load the bases. Young then came up and battled before hitting one almost past the shortstop, but the play was made to get the force out at second to end the threat.
In the seventh, a strikeout, lineout and foul out ended the game with Black Hills State holding on to the 5-4 victory.

FLC held an 11-7 edge on hits, while the Skyhawks had the only error in the game. Seven Skyhawk again had a hit with Elemen, McKenna Hefley, Gutierrez and Roberts tallying two hits apiece. Roberts drove in a pair of runs. In the circle, Trumbo went all seven innings to end up with the hard-luck loss (2-5) after allowing four earned runs. She also had four strikeouts.

Dominique DiManna led the Yellow Jackets with three hits and she also drove in three runs. In the circle, Amaral went all seven innings for the win (5-2) after allowing four earned runs and added six strikeouts.

FLC and BHSU will remain in Alamosa to play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
