Gutierrez Grand Slam, Morris Complete Game Leads to Split Against Yellow Jackets

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Pilar Gutierrez delivered the big hit in game one when she cleared the bases with an inside-the-park grand slam. After that, Emily Morris went all seven innings and kept Black Hills State to just three runs as the Fort Lewis College softball team won game one, 7-3, before the Yellow Jackets came back to win game two, 4-1, Sunday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The teams ended up splitting the four-game series that was played at Adams State due to field conditions of both Aspen Field and Aztec.

FLC (8-21, 3-13 RMAC) jumped out to the strong start right away in the first inning when Hannah Gondini led off by bunting for a hit. After an out, back-to-back walks to both Angelique Elemen and McKenna Hefley loaded the bases for Gutierrez. On a 2-2 pitch, Gutierrez ripped a line drive to center that the centerfielder tried to make a diving catch on, but the ball got under her glove and rolled all the way to the wall. That allowed everyone to score for the bases clearing grand slam and a 4-0 lead after one.

The Skyhawks tallied two more runs in the third with Taylor Hollestelle hitting the first pitch of the inning to deep center for a triple. Elemen then drove her home when she hit a full-count pitch to center for the RBI single. McKenna Hefley kept the hits coming with a single to center and after a double play, Kylie Hefley drove home her sister with a double to deep left field to make it 6-0 in favor of FLC.

Another triple helped setup the seventh run for FLC in the fourth. With one out, Cassie Sloan smacked a triple to left-center and then scored when Gondini singled to center for the 7-0 advantage.

Black Hills State (9-12, 6-7 RMAC) scored their first run of the game in the sixth and then they put together a rally in the seventh plating a pair of runs before Morris was able to get a strikeout and groundout to end the game with FLC claiming the 7-3 win.

FLC held a 9-7 advantage and hits and committed the only error of the game. Gondini led the offense with two hits, while Gutierrez drove in four runs. In the circle, Morris went all seven innings for the complete game win (3-6) as she allowed just two earned runs and added eight strikeouts.

Katelyn Odle led the Yellow Jackets with two hits and two RBI. In the circle, Breanna Henricksen started and went the first two innings to end up with the loss (0-3) after allowing six earned runs. Darian Gottfried went the final four innings and gave up just one earned run.

In game two, the Skyhawks once again faced Crystal Amaral and she made it tough to mount any offense throughout the game.

Black Hills State opened the scoring in the second bringing in two runs on three hits and an error.

Kassidy Trumbo then shutdown the Yellow Jackets over the next several innings and the offense nearly broke through a couple of times. In the fifth, FLC was able to load the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, but a foul out left the bases loaded and kept Black Hills State with the 2-0 lead.

In the sixth after two quick outs were recorded, Gutierrez singled to center and then on the very next pitch, Dana Dwyer sent a shot to left field for an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Yellow Jackets avoided any further damage getting a pop out to shortstop.

Black Hills State added the final two runs of the game in the seventh as they took advantage of an error to plate two more runs and take a 4-1 lead. FLC tried to rally in their final at-bat with Allison Young hitting a two-out double, but a strikeout followed to end the game.

BHSU held a 11-6 edge on hits with FLC committing all three errors in the game. Six Skyhawks all had a hit, while Dwyer drove in the only run. In the circle, Trumbo ended up with the hard-luck loss (2-6) after allowing just one earned run in 6.2 innings of work. Kelly Decker picked up the final out of the seventh in relief.

Alex Wiley, Maddi Fidler, Caitlyn Graves, Maddie London and Hailey Franklin all had two hits to lead the Yellow Jackets. Graves drove in three runs. In the circle, Amaral went all seven innings for the complete game victory (6-2) after allowing just one earned run.

FLC will now travel to Colorado Springs this coming Saturday and Sunday to play in an RMAC pod against host UC-Colorado Springs and Regis starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
