Elemen Breaks Doubles Record as Softball Battles to Split Versus Regis, UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Angelique Elemen broke her fourth program record so far this season when her RBI double against UC-Colorado Springs moved her to first in program history in doubles with 45. The Fort Lewis College softball team showed the offense in the opener tallying nine runs to defeat Regis 9-7. In the second game of the pod, UC-Colorado Springs rallied late and then pulled out the win in extra innings, 5-4, in eight innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Elemen posted five hits in all on the day, including a 4-4 game against Regis. In the opener against the Rangers (10-9, 7-6 RMAC) Mackenzie Parks worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning allowing just one unearned run after coming in with no outs.

Elemen then started her big day when she launched a two-run homer to center in the home half of the first inning scoring Allison Young who opened the inning with a single.

Regis tied the game with a run in the second and then took the lead with two in the third for a 4-2 lead. FLC (9-22, 4-14 RMAC) continued to work their way back into the game as a Taylor Hollestelle homer to left in the home half of the third pulled the Skyhawks to within one at 4-3.

The Rangers pushed back in front 6-3 with a two-out two-run double in the fifth. FLC came right back in the home half, taking advantage of an error to even the score. With Young and Elemen on with singles, Dana Dwyer hit a shot to shortstop that was misplayed allowing Young to score and moved Elemen to third and Dwyer to second. After a flyout marked the second out, Pilar Gutierrez singled to right-center on a 2-2 pitch to plate both runners and tie the game at 6.

In the sixth, the first three baserunners reached for FLC with Hunter Garcia walking and both Hannah Gondini and Young singling to load the bases. After a fielder's choice out a home marked the first out, Elemen lined a single to left-center to score Gondini. On the play, Young was just thrown out a home for the second out. The inning was far from over when Dwyer came through with the clutch single to left on a 3-1 pitch to score both Elemen and Hollestelee for the 9-6 lead.

The extra insurance paid off as Regis hit a solo homer in the seventh before Emily Morris came on in relief to shut the door and get the save as she allowed just a walk before getting a double play and then a strikeout to preserve the 9-7 win.

FLC outhit Regis 14-5 while both teams committed two errors. Elemen also added three RBI and three runs scored. Young added three hits and two runs scored, while Dwyer and Gutierrez had two hits each ad Dwyer drove in three runs. In the circle, Parks grabbed the win (1-1) after going six innings in relief and allowed just five earned runs and added seven strikeouts. Morris earned her first save of the season tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

Tori Brown led Regis with two hits and three RBI. In the circle, Maisie Mortimer started and took the loss (3-4) for the Rangers after allowing five earned runs. Cortney Sexton went the final inning and allowed two earned runs.

In the second game of the day against UCCS (13-16, 9-8 RMAC) FLC looked to be in good shape jumping out to a 4-1 lead after four innings.

The Mountain Lions scored the first run of the day in the first inning with a two-out RBI single.

After that, it was all Skyhawks as FLC went in front with a big third inning. Young was hit-by-pitch to open the frame and after Hollestelle used a sacrifice bunt to move her to second, Elemen ripped her program record-breaking double to right to score Young to tie the game. After a groundout marked the second out, McKenna Hefley wasted no time putting FLC ahead when she took the first pitch to left for a two-run homer to move the Skyhawks out to the 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, Kaitlyn Barlow opened the frame with a solo homer to center to give FLC a 4-1 lead.

UCCS then worked their way back into the game scoring three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an error to tie the game at four.

The game eventually went into extra innings and the Skyhawks threatened in the eighth when McKenna Hefley started a rally with a double to right-center with two outs. Gutierrez followed with a single to shortstop to put runners at the corners. The Mountain Lions escaped damage inducing a groundout back to the pitcher to keep the game tied.

In the home half, an error proved key as a fielding error with one out put a runner on second. After a strikeout, a single to left by Taylor White brought in the winning run for UCCS at 5-4.

Each team tallied seven hits and FLC committed the only two errors. McKenna Hefley led the way with two hits and two RBI. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo went all 7.2 innings and ended up with the hard-luck loss (2-7) after allowing two earned runs and tallied three strikeouts.

Rayle Glover led UCCS with two hits and two RBI. In the circle, Cami Duffey started and worked the first 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs. Braelyne Crenshaw then worked the final 3.1 innings and picked up the win (3-6) after allowing just two hits.

FLC will conclude the pod series on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. against UCCS and then against Regis at noon.
