Softball Concludes Pod Series Against Mountain Lions, Rangers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Despite a strong start in the opener on Sunday, the Fort Lewis College softball team ran into a couple of tough matchups as UC-Colorado Springs won the opener in six innings, 13-5, and then Regis won game two in five innings, 9-1, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

FLC (9-24, 4-16 RMAC) came out of the gates strong against UCCS (15-16, 11-8 RMAC) in the first game of the day as Taylor Hollestelle singled and with two outs, Dana Dwyer delivered the big blow when she lifted an 0-2 pitch over the center field fence for a two-run shot and a 2-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions got on the board in the second scoring a run on a passed ball, but Kassidy Trumbo worked out of any further damage when she got a groundball with the bases loaded to end the inning and keep FLC with the 2-1 lead.

A two-run homer pushed UCCS ahead in the third, but the Skyhawks came right back in the fourth. McKenna Hefley tied the game with a solo homer on the first pitch, then after a double by Pilar Gutierrez, Julia Roberts gave FLC the 4-3 lead when she singled up the middle to score Gutierrez.

The Mountain Lions then took the lead for good in the home half of the fourth when they scored four runs on four hits, including a three-run homer for the 7-4 lead.

FLC answered in the fifth with one more run as Hollestelle opened the frame with a double and then later scored on an RBI groundout to second by Dwyer to leave UCCS with the 7-5 lead. The Mountain Lions then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and then ended the game with a solo home run in the sixth for the 13-5 victory.

UCCS outhit FLC 15-7 and the Skyhawks committed the only three errors in the game. Hollestelle and Roberts led FLC with two hits each, while Dwyer drove in three runs. In the circle, Trumbo started and went the first two innings and allowed two earned runs. Mackenzie Parks then worked the next 1.1 innings and ended up with the loss (1-2) after allowing three earned runs. Emily Morris pitched the next 1.1 innings and allowed one earned run before Dwyer also pitched an inning and allowed one earned run.

Melissa Martinek led UCCS with a 4-5 game including five RBI and three runs scored. Rayle Glover and Peyton Reisman added two hits and Reisman drove in three. In the circle, Taylor Reidhead picked up the win (6-6) after allowing five earned runs in four innings. Braelyne Crenshaw went the final two innings to get the save after allowing just a hit.

In the second game of the day against Regis (11-10, 8-7 RMAC) the Rangers started early plating four runs in the first inning.

FLC got on the board in the third with Taylor Beaman starting the frame with a single down the left field line. After two outs were recorded, Gutierrez singled down the right field line to put runners at the corners for Angelique Elemen who drove in a run on the first pitch when she hit a sharp single to center to score Beaman and leave Regis with the 4-1 lead.

The Rangers added a run on a solo homer in the third and then used a three-run homer in the fourth to move out to an 8-1 lead. Regis then closed the game out in the fifth when the first three base runners reached before a single back to the pitcher brought in the winning run at 9-1.

Regis held a 10-5 edge on hits and neither team committed an error. Hannah Gondini, Gutierrez, Elemen, McKenna Hefley and Beaman accounted for the hits for the Skyhawks. In the circle, Kelley Decker started and ended up with the loss (1-9) after allowing three earned runs. Dwyer pitched the next three innings and allowed three earned runs along with two strikeouts. Trumbo pitched the next inning and allowed three earned runs before Morris came on for the final batter.
