Softball Piles up 10 Runs Against UCCS to Split RMAC Pod Against Mountain Lions, Orediggers

DURANGO, Colo. – Backed by a 10-run game to open the day, the Fort Lewis College softball team returned to Aspen Field with a bang as the Skyhawks took the first game of the day 10-7 over UC-Colorado Springs. In the second game, Colorado School of Mines got a strong start from Claire Stringfellow to defeat the Skyhawks 7-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday.

It's the second straight RMAC pod series for FLC (10-25, 5-17 RMAC) and behind a pair of five-run innings, the Skyhawks started the day strong with the win over UCCS (15-18, 11-10 RMAC).

After the Mountain Lions opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning, FLC came right back in the home half. Allison Young was hit-by-pitch and then moved to second when Taylor Hollestelle battled to a full-count walk. Angelique Elemen then hit a ball right behind second base that was misplayed to load the bases. Dana Dwyer came through when she singled on a 2-0 pitch to center to tie the game. McKenna Hefley then jumped on the first pitch and roped it to right-center to score a pair of runs. Following a couple of outs, Julia Roberts delivered a big hit when she singled to center to score two more runs and move FLC out to a 5-1 lead after one.

Following a few scoreless innings, the Skyhawks got the bats cooking again in the fourth. Kylie Helfey opened the frame with a single and then moved to third on a double to right by Roberts. After a pitching change, Hannah Gondini laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line to score Hefley. Young then drove in the seventh run of the game when her fly ball to left field was dropped but resulted in a sacrifice fly. Hollestelle singled to load the bases for Elemen who grounded out back to the pitcher but scored Gondini. McKenna Hefley then capped the five-run inning when she doubled to right to push FLC out to the 10-1 lead.

The Skyhawks nearly claimed the run-rule victory in the fifth when the Mountain Lions rallied with two outs getting a walk and then back-to-back doubles to score two and leave FLC with the 10-3 lead. UCCS then made a big push in the seventh. With the first two batters retired via strikeouts, the Mountain Lions worked a walk, two singles, a double and then another single to bring in four. With the tying run in the on-deck circle, Emily Morris was able to record a big strikeout to end the game and give FLC the 10-7 victory.

FLC held a 9-8 edge in hits, while the teams combined for three errors, two committed by UCCS. Roberts went 3-3 with two RBI and a run scored. McKenna Hefley added two hits, four RBI and a run scored. In the circle, Morris went all seven innings for the complete game victory (4-6) allowing seven earned runs with six strikeouts while tossing 123 pitches.

Alex Cook led UCCS with three hits and three runs scored, while Peyton Reisman, Sawyer Brewster and Taylor Reidhead drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Reidhead worked the first three innings to end up with the loss (6-7) after allowing seven runs (four earned). Braelyne Crenshaw went the final three innings and allowed three runs (two earned).

In the second game of the day after UCCS and Colorado School of Mines played, the Orediggers (16-11, 15-4 RMAC) used a strong start from Stringfellow to pick up the win.

Colorado School of Mines opened the scoring in the second when a triple was cashed in with an RBI single. A two-run homer in the third pushed the Orediggers lead out to 3-0.

FLC threatened in the home half of the third when Gondini singled and Hollestelle singled, but a groundout to third ended the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, McKenna Hefley walked, and Pilar Gutierrez singled to start another rally. A pop out followed for the second out and after a wail pitch moved runners to second and third, a groundout to second ended the threat.

The Orediggers added another run in the fifth and tacked on three more in the sixth to move out to a 7-0 lead. FLC got a runner on in the sixth and then Kelly Barr doubled in the seventh, but neither runner was able to score with Colorado School of Mines taking the 7-0 victory.

Colorado School of Mines held a 9-5 edge on hits and FLC committed the only two errors. Hollestelle, Elemen, Gutierrez, Gondini and Barr accounted for the five hits for the Skyhawks. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo started and went the first 5.1 innings to end up with the loss (2-8) after allowing seven earned runs and added three strikeouts. Kelly Decker tossed a strong 1.2 innings in relief allowing no baserunners, along with a strikeout in 16 pitches.

Katie Leiker and Boston Ludlow led the Orediggers with two hits each, while Kendall Murphy and Clara Larson drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Stringfellow went all seven innings for the complete game victory (8-5) as she won both games on the day. She picked up the shutout with five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. She gave up just one extra base hit.

FLC will conclude their pod series Sunday starting at 10 a.m. against Colorado School of Mines before finishing the day at approximately 2 p.m. against UC-Colorado Springs.
