Skyhawks Finish Pod Series in Aztec Nearly Gaining Another Split

AZTEC, N.M. – Having to move the games from Aspen Field down to the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex due to snow on the field at Aspen, the Fort Lewis College softball team ran into another tough pitching matchup against Colorado School of Mines with the Orediggers taking the opener 5-0. After Colorado School of Mines and UC-Colorado Springs battled to an extra inning game, FLC looked to be in good shape against the Mountain Lions in the finale of the series before a big seventh inning rally gave UCCS the 9-5 win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday.

After Claire Stringfellow held FLC (10-27, 5-19 RMAC) scoreless on Saturday, Sydney Marchando then went into the circle Sunday and repeated the same feat for Colorado School of Mines 17-12, 16-5 RMAC) allowing just five baserunners.

Conditions were still snowy throughout the day, but the teams were able to get all three games in.

The Orediggers opened the scoring in the first inning drawing a bases loaded walk for the 1-0 lead. Kelly Decker was then able to get a fielder's choice groundout to third to end the threat.

The Skyhawks looked to answer right back in the home half when Taylor Hollestelle singled and after Angelique Elemen was hit-by-pitch, the runners would move up to second and third on a passed ball before a groundout ended the inning.

Colorado School of Mines added another run in the fifth to move ahead 2-0. A big hit by Clara Larson in the sixth helped the Orediggers break the game open when her double to left-center with the bases loaded jumped the lead to 5-0.

FLC got a runner on in both the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't score a run with Colorado School of Mines taking the 5-0 win.

The Orediggers held an 11-3 edge in hits while neither team committed an error. Hollestelle, Elemen and Kylie Hefley all had hits for FLC. In the circle, Decker started and went all seven innings tossing 142 pitches to end up with the loss (1-10) after allowing five earned runs.

Larson led Colorado School of Mines going 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kendall Murphy and Megan Dickson added two hits, with Dickson driving in two runs. In the circle, Marchando went all seven innings to get the win (9-3) adding seven strikeouts.

FLC then looked to be in good shape against UCCS as the Skyhawks moved out to a 5-0 lead over the first five innings. The Skyhawks got the offense going in the second when Kylie Hefley singled and after Julia Roberts walked, Hannah Gondini singled through the right side to drive in the first run of the game. After Gondini stole second to put runners at second and third, Allison Young delivered the big hit with a single up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to score a pair of runs and give FLC a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, McKenna Hefley doubled to open the inning and then a perfectly placed bunt by Pilar Gutierrez put runners at the corners. Kylie Hefley then drove in her sister with a single to right-center. Taylor Beaman then drove in the fifth run of the game with an RBI groundout to second for the 5-0 advantage.

UCCS (17-18, 13-10) got on the board in the sixth with a two-run homer to trim the deficit to three. Then the seventh inning proved to be a big one for the Mountain Lions as eight of the first nine batters reached and in total, seven runs scored on five hits to move UCCS out to the 9-5 lead.

FLC tried to get a rally going in the home half when McKenna Hefley and Gutierrez opened the frame with back-to-back singles. A pop out, fielder's choice groundout and then another groundout ended the game with the Mountain Lions picking up the come-from-behind 9-5 victory.

FLC held a 14-9 edge on hits, while the Skyhawks committed the only error. Gutierrez led the way with three hits, while Hollestelle, Elemen, McKenna Hefley, Kylie Hefley and Gondini all added two hits. Young drove in two runs. In the circle, Mackenzie Parks started and went the first 3.1 innings and didn't allow a run. Emily Morris came on in the fourth and worked out of a bases loaded jam and eventually went three innings and ended up with the loss (4-7) after allowing seven runs (six earned). Kassidy Trumbo went the final two-thirds of the game and allowed two earned runs.

Melissa Martinek and Payton Romines led the Mountain Lions with two hits, while Romines and Leigh Lancaster drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Cami Duffey went the first three innings and allowed three earned runs. Braelyne Crenshaw went the final four innings and picked up the win (5-7) after allowing two earned runs.

FLC will hit the road this coming weekend as they will play at New Mexico Highlands with doubleheaders on both Saturday starting at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m.
