Hollestelle Drives in Six to Help Softball Split Day One Against Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Taylor Hollestelle had a game two to remember as she went 3-4 with six RBI to help the Fort Lewis College softball team to a split Saturday against New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls took the opener, 6-0, before the Skyhawks came back strong to take the run-rule 14-5 win in six innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

It's the 13th time in program history in which a player drove in at least six in a game, the record of seven in a game belongs to three players (Angelique Elemen, Myndee Thompson and Natalie Janes).

The second game started right away at the plate for FLC (11-28, 6-20 RMAC) as they got to work in the second inning. With one out, Kelly Barr walked and after a single by Kylie Hefley, Julia Roberts drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Taylor Beaman cashed in when she ripped a 2-0 pitch to right for an RBI single. Hannah Gondini followed with an infield single to bring in the second run of the inning. Hollestelle capped the frame with her first RBI of the game when she singled to plate two and move FLC out to a 4-0 lead.

The offense really broke the game open in the third. Barr opened the inning with a single and after Kylie Hefley walked, Roberts singled to shortstop to load the bases again. After a fielder's choice out was recorded at the plate and a pop out marked the second out, the Skyhawks put together a two-out rally that ended up manufacturing seven runs. Hollestelle got the rally going with a double to left-center to score a pair of runs. Pilar Gutierrez then followed with a double to left to score another run. McKenna Hefley brought in two when she singled to right-center and then Elemen closed the frame with a two-run homer over the left field fence to move FLC out to the 11-0 lead.

New Mexico Highlands (7-18, 6-13 RMAC) tried to fight back getting two in the third and then three more in the fourth to extend the game past a possible run-rule five innings. The Skyhawks then sealed the deal in the sixth.

Elemen opened the inning with a walk and then Barr worked a full-count walk. Kylie Hefley singled to load the bases for the third time in the game. Roberts then reached on a ball put in play to the shortstop that was misplayed for an error and brought in a run. After a double play lineout, Gondini walked and Hollestelle capped her big game with a two-run single to left to move FLC out to a 14-5 lead.

Emily Morris worked around a single in the bottom of the sixth to cap the 14-5 win for FLC.

FLC held a 14-9 edge on hits, while the teams combined for three errors, two committed by the Skyhawks. All nine Skyhawks in the lineup collected at least a hit with Hollestelle leading the way with her three-hit performance. Gutierrez, Kylie Hefley and Roberts all added two-hit games and both McKenna Hefley and Elemen drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Morris went all six innings to collect her fifth win (5-7) of the season allowing just five runs (three earned), along with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Brooklynn DeLozier and Ashley Forshee paced the Cowgirls with two hits apiece, while Forshee drove in three. In the circle, Brianna Velasquez went the first three innings and ended up with the loss (1-3) after allowing 11 earned runs. Megan Jesionowski went the final three innings and allowed three runs (two earned).

In the first game of the day, Belinda Gonzalez kept the Skyhawks off balance and allowed just two hits in picking up the win for the Cowgirls.

FLC threatened in the first when Hollestelle singled and later stole second, but a flyout ended the inning. In the home half of the second, New Mexico Highlands took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs and move out to a 3-0 lead.

The Cowgirls scored a run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Elemen singled to open the seventh, but a flyout, pop out and groundout ended the game.

NMHU held an 8-2 advantage on hits while FLC committed the only two errors in the game. Hollestelle and Elemen had the two hits for the Skyhawks. In the circle, Dana Dwyer started and went the first five innings and ended up with the loss (1-1) after allowing four runs (only one earned). Kelly Decker went the final inning and allowed two earned runs.

Olivia Muniz went 3-3 to lead the Cowgirls, while Haley Rodriguez drove in two runs. In the circle, Gonzalez went all seven innings for the complete game win (6-6) allowing just three total baserunners in the game.

FLC will conclude their four-game series with New Mexico Highlands on Sunday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Only live stats will be available for the games.
