Elemen Posts Five Hits in Doubleheader at Colorado Christian

DENVER, Colo. – Angelique Elemen went 5-for-6 with a walk Friday and a three-run homer by Kaitlyn Barlow in the second game had the Fort Lewis College softball team in front. Colorado Christian rallied to win the second game, 6-4, after winning the opener in five innings, 13-1, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

With Elemen's five hits, she moves to 199 in her career, good for third in program history. She's now 25 away from tying for the program record.

The teams played at the MSU Denver softball complex due to field conditions at Colorado Christian. Tomorrow's doubleheader will be played on the UC-Colorado Springs field.

FLC (6-17, 1-9 RMAC) threatened in the first inning of game one with Allison Young walking and after an Elemen single, Kylie Hefley walked to load the bases. Kenzie Mattey worked out of the jam for the Cougars (11-7, 7-2 RMAC) getting a strikeout to end the threat.

Colorado Christian then seized control in the home half of the inning scoring nine runs on nine hits to jump out to a 9-0 lead.

The Cougars added four more in the second to move out to a 13-0 lead.

The Skyhawks got on the board in the third when Taylor Hollestelle reached on an error and later moved to third on a single by Elemen. The teams then ran a double-steal, with Elemen being thrown out at second, but Hollestelle scored with the first run of the game.

That closed the scoring with the Cougars taking the 13-1 win after five. Colorado Christian held a 16-2 advantage on hits and they committed both errors.

Elemen led the way for the Skyhawks with two hits and in the circle, Kelly Decker started and ended up with the loss (0-7) after allowing eight runs in a third of an inning. Emily Morris went the final 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs.

Kendall Yasui paced Colorado Christian with three hits, while five others tallied two-hit games. Yasui also drove in four and three others added two RBI apiece. In the circle, Mattey grabbed the win (7-3) after allowing just one unearned run in three innings. Makena Martin went the final two innings and allowed just one base runner.

The second game was a totally different story with each team tallying nine hits and each team committing an error. FLC took a late lead in the fifth, just to watch the Cougars answer in the home half of the inning to take the win.

Colorado Christian opened the scoring with a run in the first and then Kassidy Trumbo and Jennifer Romero locked in a pitcher's duel with neither allowing another run until the fourth. After the Cougars added another run in the fourth to move ahead 2-0, FLC got the offense going in the fifth.

With an out recorded, Elemen singled and then after a walk to Hunter Garcia, Pilar Gutierrez ripped a single to right to score Elemen. The next batter, Barlow, then delivered the big hit when she fouled off several pitches before launching a deep drive to left for a three-run homer and a 4-2 lead.

It looked like the lead might hold up in the home half as Trumbo recorded two quick outs and then the Cougars pieced together a single, a double and home run to score three runs and regain the lead at 5-4.

They would add another run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 6-4.

FLC couldn't mount a rally in the seventh as Elemen worked a walk to start the inning, but then a strikeout, a hard line out to shortstop and a groundout to short ended the game.

Elemen went 3-3, while Gutierrez and Barlow added two-hit games. Barlow led the way with three RBI. In the circle, Trumbo went all six innings and ended up with the loss (2-4) after allowing six earned runs.

Yasui, Charlotte Romero and Carly Perry all had two hits to lead the Cougars, while Romero and Stephanie Day each drove in a pair of runs. In the circle, Romero picked up with win (4-2) after allowing four earned runs in five innings. Mattey then closed out the final two innings for her second save of the season after allowing just a walk.

The teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow (Saturday) with another doubleheader starting at noon. The games will be played in Colorado Springs on the campus of UC-Colorado Springs.
