Cougars Use Late Rally in Game Two Sunday to Slip Past Softball

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two and were tied going into the fourth inning when Colorado Christian scored six runs over the final three innings to come back and take the second game, 11-5, after winning the opener in six innings, 8-0, Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action that was played at the UC-Colorado Springs Field.

FLC (6-19, 1-11 RMAC) came out strong in the second game after Kenzie Mattey was locked in during the opener picking up the win. Then after the Skyhawks had knocked Jennifer Romero out of the circle in game two, again came Mattey and she allowed just a hit over the final 5.1 innings to allow the offense to come back to grab the win.

In the opener, the Skyhawks put a runner in scoring position in the first inning when Taylor Hollestelle doubled with one out. A pair of pop outs followed to leave the runner stranded. Colorado Christian (14-7, 8-2 RMAC) broke through with two runs on four hits, along with an error in the home half to jump out to the 2-0 lead.

FLC added a hit in the second, but Pilar Gutierrez's single came with two outs and a strikeout followed to end the frame. The game remained 2-0 all the way into the fifth when the Cougars plated five runs on three hits, along with an error to jump out to a 7-0 lead.

Angelique Elemen doubled with two outs in the sixth, but again Mattey worked around the hit and got a fly out to end the frame. Colorado Christian then won the game in the sixth when a sacrifice fly ended the game and sent the Cougars to the 8-0 win.

Colorado Christian held a 9-4 lead in hits and FLC committed the only two errors in the game. Hollestelle, Elemen, Gutierrez and Julia Roberts all had a hit. In the circle, Emily Morris went all 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs to end up with the loss (2-6). She recorded six strikeouts.

Kendall Yasui, Charlotte Romero and Caitlin McCarthy all had two hits to lead the Cougars, while McCarthy drove in a pair of runs. In the circle, Mattey went all six innings to grab the win (8-3) after allowing just the four hits and no runs.

The offense exploded in the second game for the Skyhawks, plating five runs in the second inning. Gutierrez opened the frame with a single and then Mackenzie Parks reached on an error by the third baseman. Kelly Barr then reached on a fielder's choice RBI, as the Cougars got the force out at second, but Gutierrez motored around and scored with the first run of the game. Robyn Hall then reached on an error by the second baseman and then a single by Hannah Gondini loaded the bases. Allison Young worked a full-count walk to bring in the second run of the inning. Hollestelle then singled down the left field line to bring in Hall with the third run of the inning. Elemen kept the hits coming as she also singled down the left field line to drive in Gondini. After an out, Gutierrez worked a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to bring in the fifth run of the inning that left FLC with the 5-0 lead.

Colorado Christian then slowly worked their way back into the game getting a run in the second and then tied the game in the third when they scored four runs to even the score at five.

FLC tried to regain the lead in the fourth when Hollestelle doubled with one out and moved to third with two outs, but a foul out ended the inning.

The Cougars then took the lead in the home half of the fourth with a run to push out to the 6-5 lead. They then added four more runs in the fifth to take a 10-5 lead.

Colorado Christian closed the scoring with a run in the sixth to take the 11-5 victory.

The Cougars held a 12-6 edge on hits and committed the only two errors in the game. Hollestelle led the way for the Skyhawks with two hits, while four others had at least a hit and five drove in at least a run. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo started and went the first three inning and allowed five runs. Kelly Decker went the final three innings and ended up with the loss (0-8) after allowing six runs.

Stephanie Day led Colorado Christian with three hits and drove in three runs. Kacie Burger and Carly Perry added two hits and two RBI apiece. In the circle, Romero started and went the first 1.2 innings and allowed five runs, all unearned. Then Mattey came on in relief and worked the final 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit to pick up her ninth win of the season (9-3).

FLC will now return home for their home openers this coming Saturday and Sunday against Black Hills State starting at noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. The games right now will be played at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec, N.M.
