Parks Tallies Four Hits to Nearly Lead Softball Back Against Roadrunners

DURANGO, Colo. – Mackenzie Parks cracked a towering solo home run in the first game and then added three hits in game two to nearly lead the Fort Lewis College softball team back against MSU Denver. The Roadrunners claimed game one, 8-1, and then a late rally fell just short in game two as MSU Denver took the second game, 6-4, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday at Aspen Field.

The second game went right down to the wire with FLC (13-30, 8-22 RMAC) plating a pair of runs in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate before MSU Denver (21-22, 16-10 RMAC) held on to take both games.

Not only did Parks have a big game two with three hits and two RBI, but Taylor Hollestelle also added three hits and drove in a run.

The Roadrunners opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning off three hits to move out to the 2-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, the Skyhawks came right back. After McKenna Hefley reached via a walk, sister Kylie Hefley hit one back to the pitcher. She originally tried to go to first before trying to turn and get the lead runner at second. In the process, the throw got away and the error put runners at the corners. Pilar Gutierrez followed with a groundball to shortstop that was mishandled, and the error brought home McKenna Hefley and put runners at first and second. Parks worked a five-pitch walk to load the bases. A double play followed, but after Hunter Garcia walked, Hollestelle drove in the tying run when she took the first pitch to center to score Gutierrez and leave the game knotted at two after two.

MSU Denver regained the lead in the fifth scoring an unearned run to move out to a 3-2 advantage. FLC nearly took the lead in the sixth when Parks singled and later Hollestelle doubled to put runners at second and third. Allison Young battled and then hit a line drive out to deep left-center that was just grabbed by the centerfielder to save at least two runs.

In the seventh, the Roadrunners added three big insurance runs to move ahead 6-2. Down to their final at-bat, the Skyhawks nearly came all the way back. With one out, McKenna Hefley singled and after a strikeout marked the second out, Pilar Gutierrez walked and Parks ripped a double to center to score both runners and leave FLC down two at 6-4. Julia Roberts stepped in and worked the count full before a strikeout ended the game giving MSU Denver the 6-4 victory in game two.

FLC held a 9-7 edge in hits, while there were three errors, two committed by the Roadrunners. Kassidy Trumbo started and went all seven innings in the circle for the Skyhawks allowing six runs (five earned) to end up with the loss (3-9).

Ashlee Kim and Abby Anderson led MSU Denver with two hits apiece, while Kim and Rebecca Gonzales each drove in two runs. In the circle, Julia Heitz went the first four innings and ended up getting the win (7-5) after allowing just two unearned runs. Destinee Lopez was big in relief getting her first save of the season working three innings and allowing two earned runs.

In the first game of the day, neither team scored through the first two innings. In the third, Laney Sheppard delivered the big hit when her grand slam moved the Roadrunners out to a 5-0 lead.

After the Roadrunners added another run in the fifth to move ahead 6-0, Parks launched a deep homer to center field in the home half of the fifth to leave MSU Denver ahead 6-1.

The Roadrunners closed the scoring in the seventh as they tallied two more runs to take the 8-1 victory.

MSU Denver held a 9-2 edge in hits while neither team committed an error.

Kylie Hefley and Parks had the hits for the Skyhawks, while in the circle, Emily Morris started and went the first 2.1 innings ending up with the loss (6-8) after allowing five earned runs. Parks then went the final 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs.

Eight Roadrunners had at least a hit with Kim tallying two hits and Sheppard driving in five runs. In the circle, Darby McGhee tossed a complete game victory (9-9) allowing just one earned run.

FLC will close their four-game series with MSU Denver on Sunday starting with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Aspen Field.
