Softball Picks up First Win Against MSU Denver Since 2015 in Sunday Split

DURANGO, Colo. – Backed by a strong start in the circle from Kelly Decker and two runs driven in by both Kylie Hefley and Pilar Gutierrez helped lead the Fort Lewis College softball team to a 6-1 win in the opener Sunday against MSU Denver. The Roadrunners then came back strong with a pair of innings in the second game to take the 20-5 win in six innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The win in the opener was the first win in the series for FLC (14-31, 9-23 RMAC) since 2015, snapping a 13-game losing streak in the series.

It was the start the Skyhawks were looking for with Kylie Hefley delivering the big hit in the first inning to put FLC on top for good. Taylor Hollestelle opened the inning by being hit-by-pitch on an 0-2 count. Allison Young then placed a perfect bunt out in front of the plate she beat out for a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, a groundout to shortstop marked the second out and then Kylie Hefley came through clutch when she lifted an 0-1 pitch to deep left-center for a two-run double.

FLC put the game out of reach in the third when Young walked, McKenna Hefley singled and then a single to center by Dana Dwyer loaded the bases without an out. A pitching change followed and after a strikeout, Gutierrez hit a shot through the left side that brought in a pair of runs for the 4-0 lead. Mackenzie Parks closed the frame with a sacrifice fly to center for the 5-0 lead after three.

A pair of errors in the fourth helped plate the final run for FLC as a fielding error by the shortstop put runners at first and second and after a sacrifice bunt, a throwing error by the third baseman brought in Taylor Beaman who singled to open the inning for the 6-0 lead.

MSU Denver (22-23, 17-11 RMAC) broke up the shutout in the seventh and were threatening for more when Emily Morris came on in relief and slammed the door getting a strikeout, lineout and fly out to end the game.

The Roadrunners held a 10-7 edge in hits, while the teams combined for three errors, two committed by MSU Denver. Gutierrez had two hits to lead the way while both Kylie Hefley and Gutierrez drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Decker started and went the first six innings to grab the win (2-10) allowing just the one earned run. Morris worked a perfect seventh inning.

Leadoff batter Ashlee Kim led the Roadrunners with three hits, while Megan Sansburn and Rebecca Gonzales added two hits each. In the circle, Darby McGhee started and went the first two innings and ended up with the loss (9-10) after allowing five earned runs. Kylee Burnside allowed just an unearned run in four innings of relief.

In the second game of the day, FLC had everything going in the right direction after erasing an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the first and then three more in the fifth to jump out to a 5-1 lead.

After MSU Denver came through with a two-out RBI single in the first inning, the Skyhawks answered right back in the home half when Young reached on an error by the left fielder and then quickly scored when McKenna Hefley hit a deep drive to center that resulted in an RBI triple. Sister Kylie Hefley pushed FLC on top when she grounded out to second for the RBI and the 2-1 lead after one.

In the third, Hollestelled ripped a double right down the left field line to open the frame. A groundout moved her to third and following a walk by McKenna Hefley, Kylie Hefley singled to left field on an 0-2 pitch to left to score Hollestelle. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up just in time for another big hit from Parks, as she delivered big hits all weekend and her single up the middle brought in two for a 5-1 lead.

Then the fifth inning rolled around and MSU Denver got the offense going in a big way. The first six batters reached and when the inning was over the Roadrunners had scored 11 runs on eight hits, along with an error for the 12-5 lead.

MSU Denver put the game out of reach in the sixth when they added eight more runs on six hits for the 20-5 lead that forced the run-rule win in six innings.

MSU Denver held a 17-10 advantage in hits, while the teams combined for three errors with the Roadrunners committing two. McKenna Hefley, Parks and Julia Roberts all had two hits to lead the Skyhawks while Parks and Kylie Hefley drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Kassidy Trumbo started and re-entered during the game while tossing 4.2 innings and allowing three earned runs. Morris came on in relief first and ended up with the loss (6-9) after allowing nine runs (five earned) in two-thirds of an inning. Decker also went two-thirds of an inning and allowed seven earned runs and Parks allowed a run in relief.

Five players had at least two hits for MSU Denver with Sansburn going 4-4 with three RBI. Alyssa Richter went 3-5 with three RBI, Laney Sheppard added four RBI and Gonzales drove in three. In the circle, Julia Heitz started and went the first 2.1 innings and allowed four runs (two earned). Destinee Lopez came on in relief and picked up the win (3-1) after allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings.
