McKenna Hefley Drives in Three, Elemen Ties Hits Record as Softball Splits in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – McKenna Hefley had a big game to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod for the Fort Lewis College softball team when she drove in three, including a home run, to power the Skyhawks to a 5-4 win over CSU-Pueblo. In the second game, Angelique Elemen hit a pair of home runs, with the second one tying her for the program hits record with Missy Fundora. Chadron State was able to pull away late for the 8-5 win during the second game Friday.

McKenna Hefley went 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored, along with a home run to lead FLC (15-32, 10-24 RMAC) to the big win in the opener. Julia Roberts also launched a home run and Elemen added an RBI single.

In the second game, Elemen hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats to tie her for the hits record with Fundora at 224.

In the opener, FLC came out swinging against CSU-Pueblo (11-25, 10-22 RMAC) when McKenna Hefley drilled a two-run homer to left-center scoring Taylor Hollestelle who opened the frame with a single.

Emily Morris worked out of a big bases-loaded jam in the home half of the inning when the first three players reached with singles, she then got a strikeout and induced a groundball back to her in the circle to start the 1-2-3 double play and leave FLC with the 2-0 lead.

A pair of unearned runs by the ThunderWolves in the second tied the score at two. The Skyhawks answered right back in the third to take the lead for good. Roberts opened the frame with a solo homer to left-center. After Hollestelle reached via an error, she moved to second on a groundout and then scored when Elemen hit a shot to center for a single that was later misplayed to allow Hollestelle to score and move Elemen to third. She would score when McKenna Hefley singled through the right side for the 5-2 lead.

Morris worked out of another bases-loaded jam in the third as the first three batters again reached, but then another double play and a pop out kept CSU-Pueblo off the scoreboard.

The ThunderWolves loaded the bases again in the sixth and this time they were able to score a pair of runs, but a big double play on a sacrifice fly into left that ended up cutting down a runner at second left FLC with the 5-4 lead.

Kassidy Trumbo came on to get out of the jam in the sixth and then worked a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh getting the 3-4-5 hitters in the CSU-Pueblo lineup to claim the 5-4 win.

FLC held an 11-10 advantage in hits, while the teams combined for three errors, two by the ThunderWolves.

Outside of McKenna Hefley's three-hit, three RBI game, Hollestelle, Pilar Gutierrez and Roberts all added two hits. In the circle, Morris went the first 5.1 innings and collected the win (7-9) after allowing four runs (two earned). Trumbo picked up her first save of the season when she worked a perfect 1.2 innings.

Gabby Moreno led CSU-Pueblo with three hits, while Sabrina Felix and Hailey Hicks added two hits. Moreno also drove in three. In the circle, Taylor Strupp took the loss (6-13) after going the first 2.1 innings and allowed five runs (three earned). Hannah Anderson was solid in relief going the final 4.2 innings and didn't allow a run.

In the second game against Chadron State (12-31, 9-24 RMAC) one team at least scored through the first five innings and then neither team scored over the final two frames. FLC jumped out to the start they were looking for when Allison Young doubled in front of a two-run homer to right-center by Elemen.

The Eagles came right back with three unearned runs in the home half to move out to the 3-2 lead.

Dana Dwyer opened the second with a single up the middle and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Roberts singled to right to even the game at three.

Chadron State regained the lead in the bottom of the second, just to watch Elemen connect on a solo homer to begin the third to even the score at four. It was a big bottom of the fourth for the Eagles as they scored three runs on just one hit to take a 7-4 lead.

Hollestelle launched the third home run of the game for the Skyhawks with her solo shot to open the fifth to move FLC to within two at 7-5.

After Chadron State answered in the home half to move ahead 8-5, the Skyhawks couldn't mount a comeback in the sixth or seventh innings, going in order in both frames.

Each team had eight hits while FLC committed all three errors in the game. Elemen led the way going 2-2 with two home runs, three RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Dwyer added a two hit games and both Hollestelle and Roberts each drove in a run. In the circle, Kelly Decker went all six innings to end up with the loss (2-11) after allowing eight runs (four earned).

Haleigh Hoefs paced Chadron State with three hits and two RBI. Bailey Rominger added two hits and two RBI. In the circle, Dallas Magnusson started and went the first four innings allowing five earned runs to get the win. Peyton Propp went the final three innings to get the save after not allowing a run.

A look around the RMAC has Regis still in seventh at 11-18 (.379) and Adams State in eighth at 11-20 (.355) as the two teams split on Friday. CSU-Pueblo is still ninth at 10-22 (.313) and Fort Lewis is 10th at 10-24 (.294). CSU-Pueblo defeated Chadron State in the final game of the pod on Friday getting a walk-off homer in the seventh for the 5-4 win.
