Softball Faces Tough Pitching Against Dixie State, Enter Final Day of Regular Season Still Alive for Postseason Bid

DURANGO, Colo. – Dixie State threw a pair of tough pitchers at the Fort Lewis College softball team Friday and backed by a near no-hitter and then a one-run game, the Trailblazers defeated the Skyhawks 3-0 and then 11-1 in five innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

What that means for Fort Lewis is that the Skyhawks move down to 11th in the conference standings but remain alive for a possible postseason bid. FLC will need to win both games Saturday and then get help. Adams State fell in both games to UCCS, dropping the second game in a wild 15-14 nine inning affair. CSU-Pueblo rallied in the second game against Colorado School of Mines to erase a near no-hitter to win 4-3 in nine innings to split the day. Chadron State also split against Black Hills State. That leaves FLC needing to win both games Saturday, along with Adams State losing both games, CSU-Pueblo losing both games and Chadron State winning no more than one game. If that happens, FLC would move ahead of all three teams, holding off Adams State by the smallest percentage points (.325 to .324). The only spot the Skyhawks can reach is the eighth seed, as Regis can finish with no lower than a .343 winning percentage.

In the opener, FLC (16-35, 11-27 RMAC) went against All-American Cambrie Hazel in the circle and she limited the Skyhawks to just two baserunners in seven innings. While she was rolling, Kassidy Trumbo didn't back down as she kept Dixie State (35-10, 29-9 RMAC) off the board until the fourth.

FLC picked up their first baserunner in the second when Pilar Gutierrez worked a walk. Hazel then came back with a pair of strikeouts to leave the runner stranded.

In the fourth, the Trailblazers put together a two out rally to score two runs on four hits to move out to a 2-0 lead. The final run of the game would come across in the fifth when Kori Gahn tripled to right for the 3-0 lead.

Hazel carried a no-hitter into the seventh when Angelique Elemen was able to get the first hit for FLC. After battling back to a full-count, Elemen ripped a shot to right-center that one-hoped the wall and resulted in a double. Hazel was able to get a strikeout and a pop out to end the game.

Dixie State held a 7-1 edge on hits while neither team committed an error. In the circle, Trumbo went all seven innings and ended up with the complete game loss (4-11) despite allowing just three earned runs and mixed in five strikeouts.

Seven different players had a hit for Dixie State, while Hazel tallied her 15th win (15-5) in the circle going all seven innings to get the shutout victory. She also added 13 strikeouts.

In game two, the Trailblazers opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, but FLC fought back to get a run in the home half. Taylor Hollestelle led off in style with a double to right. After moving to third on a wild pitch and Allison Young reached on a hit-by-pitch, a perfectly executed squeeze was laid down by Gutierrez to score Hollestelle and left Dixie State with the 2-1 lead after one.

After that, the Trailblazers scored a run in the second, four more in the third and then four more in the fourth to force the run-rule 11-1 win in five innings.

Dixie State outhit FLC 12-2 and again neither team committed an error. In the circle, Kelly Decker started and ended up with the loss (2-12) after allowing seven earned runs in 2.1 innings. Emily Morris went the next inning and allowed four earned runs before Mackenzie Parks finished off the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow a run.

FLC will look to try and make the RMAC Tournament Saturday when they play another doubleheader against Dixie State starting at 11 a.m. at Aspen Field. Elemen will be honored as the only senior on the team following the second game.
