Morris Tosses the Seventh No-Hitter in Program History as Skyhawks Complete Sunday Sweep

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Emily Morris was in control throughout the day. After coming on in relief to close out game one, she then started game two and tossed the seventh no-hitter in program history to help the Fort Lewis College softball team sweep New Mexico Highlands by scores of 7-4 and 16-0 in five innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday.

In total, Morris tossed six innings and allowed just three walks with no hits over the two games after working a scoreless seventh inning in game one. During her no-hitter, she allowed just a walk in the second, third and fourth innings and tallied five strikeouts to pick up her sixth (6-7) win of the season. It was also the first no-hitter thrown by an RMAC pitcher this season.

Morris received plenty of run support right away as FLC (13-28, 8-20 RMAC) scored four in the first inning. Taylor Hollestelle led off and was hit-by-pitch. After later moving to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball, she would later score on a double steal after Angelique Elemen was hit-by-pitch, both went in motion with Elemen stealing second and Hollestelle coming home with the first run of the game. Following a McKenna Hefley walk and steal of second, Kylie Hefley singled up the middle to plate both McKenna Hefley and Elemen for the 3-0 lead. Taylor Beaman closed the scoring in the frame when she hit a sacrifice fly to left for the 4-0 lead.

The Skyhawks then put the game away in the third. McKenna Hefley walked to open the frame and after her sister Kylie singled to left, Mackenzie Parks singled to load the bases. Beaman singled to center to bring in a pair of runs after a misplay by the centerfielder. A few batters later, Hollestelle continued her blistering weekend with a three-run homer to left-center for the 9-0 lead. Pilar Gutierrez singled and quickly scored when Elemen doubled to left-center for the 10-0 lead. McKenna Hefley closed the scoring in the inning when she singled to left-center to plate Elemen with the 11th run of the game.

In the fourth, a ball put in play by Julia Roberts was misplayed by the shortstop and allowed Cassie Sloan to score who came in to pinch-run for Parks who walked to open the inning. After Allison Young singled, Hollestelle doubled to left-center to bring in two more runs, with one scoring on an error by the left fielder for the 14-0 lead.

In the fifth, Beaman singled and a sacrifice fly by Roberts added two more runs to close the scoring at 16-0 to force the run-rule five inning win.

FLC held the 13-0 advantage on hits, while NMHU (7-20, 6-15 RMAC) committed all four errors in the game. Eight Skyhawks had at least a hit with Hollestelle, McKenna Hefley, Kylie Hefley, Beaman and Young all tallying two hits. Hollestelle drove in four runs, while Beaman added three and Kylie Hefley with two.

Nicole Correia, Olivia Muniz and Haley Rodriguez were the only baserunners for NMHU all reaching via a walk. Megan Jesionowski started in the circle and ended up with the loss (0-2) after allowing 11 runs (seven earned) in three innings. Bogarin went the final two innings and allowed five runs (three earned).

In the first game of the day, FLC started slow, but got the offense going late in the game. The Cowgirls tallied the first two runs of the game in the first on a home run and then added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Elemen got things going with a one-out double and then came home when Kylie Hefley doubled on an 0-1 pitch to right-center to trim the deficit to three at 3-1.

FLC then broke the game open in the fifth. Parks opened the inning with a solo home run on the first pitch she saw. After an out, Hollestelle singled and after Gutierrez singled, McKenna Hefley cashed in both runs when she singled up the middle to give FLC the 4-3 lead. The inning wasn't done as her sister later drove in both when Kylie drilled the first pitch she saw to left-center for a two-run homer and a 6-3 lead.

The Cowgirls got a little closer with a run in the sixth, but Kassidy Trumbo was able to get a groundout to second to leave two runners on and keep FLC with the 6-4 lead.

In the seventh, FLC added some insurance when Roberts hit an RBI single to right to score Sloan who came on to pinch-run for McKenna Hefley who opened the inning with a single.

In the bottom of the seventh, NMHU threatened as the opened the inning with a single and a walk. Morris then came on in relief and shut the door getting a strikeout, flyout and another strikeout to end the game and get the save on the 7-4 victory.

FLC outhit NMHU 12-8 while the teams combined for five errors, with three committed by the Cowgirls. Eight Skyhawks had at least a hit with Hollestelle going 3-4 with a run scored. McKenna and Kylie Hefley each had two hits, with Kylie driving in three and McKenna with two. In the circle, Trumbo started and went the first six innings to get the win (3-8) as she allowed just four runs (two earned) along with three strikeouts. Morris then worked a scoreless seventh to collect her second save of the season.

Brooklyn DeLozier tallied two hits for the Cowgirls, while Breanna Cabrera drove in two runs. Belinda Gonzalez started and went all seven innings for the Cowgirls to end up with the loss (6-7) after allowing seven runs (six earned).

It was a weekend to remember for Hollestelle as she drove in 10 runs and tallied nine hits in the four games. She's also riding an 11-game hitting streak.

FLC is now just percentage points back of the eighth spot in the RMAC with Black Hills State sitting eighth with a .333 percentage, CSU-Pueblo ninth with a .308 percentage and then FLC and NMHU are tied for 10th with a .286 percentage.

FLC will now return home to host MSU Denver for a four-game series at Aspen Field with doubleheaders both Saturday starting at noon and Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. Fans, make sure to be there for all four games for your chance to possibly win $25,000! More information will be released throughout the week.
