Skyhawks dominate shots battle, but fall 1-0 on the road against Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, New Mexico — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Saturday, losing a tight 1-0 road battle to Eastern New Mexico University.

It was a tough tally in the loss column for the Skyhawks (1-2 overall) given how well the team played Saturday, dominating the shot totals 14-8 over the Greyhounds, including an 8-2 margin in shots on goal.

"We've out-shot our opponents in every game so far this season and we didn't allow a shot in the second half. We're obviously happy about that. But I think, emotionally, we were exhausted from Thursday's game and not being able to get the result against West Texas A&M we hoped for," said Fort Lewis head coach Damian Clarke, referring to Thursday's game that was declared a no contest due to severe weather with Fort Lewis holding a late 4-3 lead.  "But all things aside, we played a very physical and competitive Eastern New Mexico team and we just kind of ran out of time."

Eastern New Mexico (3-0 overall) took advantage of a rare scoring opportunity at the 25:06 mark of the first half as Desiree Morgas was able to place a shot just out of the reach of Fort Lewis goalkeeper, Britt Blomso.

Blomso recorded one save on the only other shot on goal from ENM as she and the Fort Lewis back line of Diana Sifuentes, Chloe Chapman, Katie Smith and Ashley Strader were able to keep the Greyhounds' forwards in check.

"(Morgas) hit a great shot that beats most goalkeepers nine out of 10 times. There wasn't anything Britt could do about that," Clarke said. "I think between the back four and Britt, we've grown a bunch. We were very happy with how we played, defensively."

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, the Greyhounds, who have yet to allow a goal so far in 2019, were also stingy on Saturday as goalkeeper Whitney Dockweiler stopped all eight shots she faced.

Fort Lewis will now look to bounce back at 4 p.m. Friday when it travels to face Black Hills State University to kick-off conference play.

Following a challenging non-conference schedule, Clarke said he and the team feel prepared for the challenge of the RMAC season.

"All four teams we played are going to be good enough to compete for national tournament berths, so I think we put ourselves in a great situation with the competition we choose to play this year," Clarke said. "I'd like to think we're as ready as any other RMAC team going into the conference schedule. I think we've grown a lot on both sides of the ball, especially offensively. Last year, we were fortunate to muster 10 shots a game. I think this year we're in a different situation where we can create some issues for opposing teams."
