Lightning cuts Skyhawks' RMAC opener short in 0-0 tie against Black Hills

SPEARFISH, South Dakota — Fort Lewis College women's soccer coach Damian Clarke has seen a lot happen on a soccer pitch over his 12 seasons as a NCAA Division II head coach. But the havoc wreaked by Mother Nature the last two weeks has been unique.

After having a late lead against West Texas A&M University washed away by the rain last Thursday, the Skyhawks had Friday's RMAC opener against Black Hills State University end prematurely in a 0-0 tie between the two overtime periods.

A 30-minute lightning delay was issued following the end of the first overtime. The game was then ruled official approximately an hour later as lightning in the area persisted and the three-hour time limit for the contest had been exceeded.

"I've never experienced this in my over 20 years of soccer. I've never seen two games canceled by lightning in the same season in my career," Clarke said. "I think we were all kind of in shock (when the game was called). We'll just have to put this one behind us and keep moving forward."

Fort Lewis (1-2-1 overall, 0-0-1 RMAC) was eagerly anticipating the start of the second overtime as the Skyhawks dominated the shots on goal category, 26-12, and held a 6-1 advantage over the Yellow Jackets (0-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 RMAC) in the first overtime period.

The Skyhawks, who have now won the shots battle in each of their first four games this season, put six shots on goal and two additional chances ring off the post. The last coming from senior Valerie Maestas with 4:38 remaining in overtime.

In total, 11 different Fort Lewis players recorded at least one shot Friday evening, led by Maestas with six, and the duo of senior Emma Patron and junior Corinne Sanderson with three apiece.

"We're putting ourselves in positions to win games. At some point, the shoe is going to drop and the suffering will stop," Clarke said. "We're doing a lot of things right and what we need to do to move in the right direction. It's just a little painful right now."

Defensively, Fort Lewis recorded its first shutout of the 2019 season, limiting Black Hills State to one shot on goal in the 59th minute that was stopped by senior goalkeeper, Britt Blomso.

The Skyhawks will look to build off Friday's positives when they continue their current five-game road swing at 1 p.m. Sunday against Regis University. The Rangers, preseason ranked No. 5 in the RMAC coaches' poll, are currently 3-3-1 overall on the year and coming off a 3-0 win against Adams State University on Friday.

"We've got to have our best performance of the year (Sunday) against Regis," Clarke said. "We have a tough group and we'll keep getting tougher. Sunday will be another wonderful test for us to keep getting better."
