Skyhawks fall on the road to Regis

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team completed its weekend road trip on Sunday, falling by a 4-1 final to a loaded Regis University team.

"That was one of the better Regis teams I've seen over the last 20 years," said Fort Lewis head coach, Damian Clarke. "They are a mature and technically gifted team and deserved the result."

Fort Lewis (1-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 RMAC) played toe-to-toe with the Rangers (4-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 RMAC) throughout much of Sunday's contest before Regis tacked on a pair of late insurance goals in the 77th and 82nd minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso was solid while facing heavy pressure from a Rangers' front line that fired a total of 26 shots on Sunday, 13 of them on goal.

Blomso finished with a season-high nine saved, just two off her career-high of 11 set on Sept. 18, 2016 against New Mexico Highlands.

"Britt was phenomenal (Sunday) and did a great job of keeping us in the game long enough to score a goal and force Regis to respond," Clarke said.

After falling down 1-0 in the first half, the Skyhawks pulled even with the Rangers with an early goal to begin the second half. Senior forward Valerie Maestas scored her first goal of the seasons, finding the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Katie Smith at the 46:03 mark.

For Smith, a Second-Team All-RMAC defenseman a season ago, the assist was her first point of the 2019 season.

"It was awesome to see those two get going. Katie won a header at the half line that she was able to push in front of herself, made a really good pass to Val, and Val scored a phenomenal goal," Clarke said. "We're seeing some things coming together for some individuals at different places on the field. There's just some more work to be done."

The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the 52nd minute when Regis midfielder Emily Ramos netted an unassisted goal to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead and the momentum back for good.

The Skyhawks will now get a week off to rest and regroup before heading off to Alamosa next Sunday for an 11 a.m. matchup against Adams State University.

"I think we traveled a little over 2,500 miles over the last eight days. So while Sunday will be another road trip, it'll be nice having the week to get these kids settled back into school and to train," Clarke said. "We're looking forward to getting some time back on the training field and getting better."
