Skyhawks earn first RMAC win on the road against Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team picked up its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory of the season on Sunday, earning a 2-1 road win over Adams State University.

"It feels great to get a win. It was certainly something we needed because the kids have been working very hard," said Fort Lewis head coach, Damian Clarke. "We just found a way to win. Adams State played well, played tough and we were playing in 30-40 mile per hour wind gusts. At the end of the second half, Adams State had three corner kicks in the final four minutes with the wind blowing the ball toward the goal. But we dug ourselves out of a difficult situation to get the win."

While the winds wreaked havoc, especially in the second half, all the fireworks came before the break as Fort Lewis (2-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 RMAC) and Adams State (2-4 overall, 0-3 RMAC) played an action-pack first half, with all three of the game's goals coming in the first 45 minutes.

The Skyhawks drew first blood at the 10:59 mark when junior Corinne Sanderson finished off a feed from senior Valerie Maestas.

For Sanderson, the transfer from Idaho State University, the goal was her first tally on the scoresheet as a Skyhawk.

"She needed it. She's been working hard and just hadn't had the fortune to get one to drop for her," Clarke said of Sanderson's goal. "It was a good pass from Val to find Corinne at the top of the box and she finished the chance really well."

Adams State pulled even with Fort Lewis in the 33rd minute on a goal from Jordyn Maes, but the tie would be short-lived as the Skyhawks answered back just 12 minutes later.

With 19 seconds remaining before halftime, Fort Lewis vaulted back in front, courtesy of the first career goal for freshman midfielder, Madyson Barela.

"That was critical. Sometimes the timing of goals is really impactful," Clarke said. "We felt really good there getting to go into the half with the lead and switching the momentum again. It was a great finish from Madyson. She's been finishing well in training and we were hoping we could get her on the end of something. She took her chance well and we can't complain about some of our new players causing problems for other teams, that's for sure."

As a team, Fort Lewis dominated the shot totals on Sunday— the fifth time in six games this season the Skyhawks have won the shots battle — as they finished with an 11-3 advantage over the Grizzlies.

In net, senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso finished with one save en route to earning her second win between the pipes this season.

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward a pair of Homecoming weekend games against Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday against the No. 9 ranked Orediggers at Dirks Field.

"Colorado School of Mines will be a very stout test, but one I think we're going to learn a lot about ourselves and grow a lot in," Clarke said. "Then we have to make sure we don't overlook a very good Colorado Christian team on Sunday. We'll be facing two very good teams next weekend.I think we fell victim to that last year, where we overlooked Colorado Christian because we were really concentrating on Mines. We found out how good Colorado Christian was the hard way. But that won't be the scenario this time. We're going to make sure we're prepared for both games."
