Vasquez records third double-double, but Skyhawks' offense struggles in road loss to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team suffered its first minor speed bump of the season on Friday, falling 62-48 on the road against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

It was just the second conference loss of the season for the Skyhawks (10-3 overall, 6-2 RMAC), but one that did not look likely after FLC began the night firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 16-6 lead over the Mountain Lions (3-11 overall, 2-6 RMAC) through the game's opening quarter.

"It was a tough game for us," said Fort Lewis head coach Orlando Griego. "The good thing about our team is they know they can play better and know that we didn't have the best game (Friday). The good news is we get to play tomorrow and I know they'll come out strong. This is a good test of adversity and when it comes to basketball, adversity is good. One game won't define who we are."

Fort Lewis shot 47% (7-of-15) in the first quarter, while limiting UCCS to 17% (3-of-18).  Junior forward Jordan Carter tallied six quick points to begin the ballgame and the Skyhawks would extend their lead to 12 at the 8:58 mark of the second quarter before the proverbial lid went on the basket.

FLC finished 2-of-17 (from the field in the second quarter, opening the door for the Mountain Lions to climb back into the game. Abby Feickert nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give UCCS a 24-22 lead at the break and send them into the halftime locker rooms with momentum.

Feickert led the comeback for the Mountain Lions, finishing with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting.

"Credit UCCS for playing really well and putting together that second quarter. They hit that buzzer beater at the end, went into the half with confidence, and that continued," Griego said. "In those third and fourth quarters, we tried to get them off-balance because their confidence was high. When we'd get a couple stops, we'd miss some shots or they'd have answers."

Fort Lewis was led by freshman forward Jordan Vasquez as she recorded her third double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Katrina Chandler added 13 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Carter finished with eight points and seven rebounds to help keep the Skyhawks in contact.

FLC was able to inch back within eight early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by junior forward Chloe Warrington, but were unable to string enough baskets, or free-throw makes, together to make a sustained run back at UCCS.

The Skyhawks 18-of-62 (29%) from the field after their hot first quarter and were 10-of-26 from the free-throw line.

"We were still getting the same shots (as the first quarter). We did a nice job of pounding the ball inside early. Jordan Carter got off to a nice start and Jordan Vasquez came in and continued doing a nice job in there," Griego said. "We continued to get open shots. Unfortunately, we weren't able to capitalize and knock those shots down… At the end of the day, we have to be able to make shots and make them when they count."

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it continues its four-game road swing against Colorado School of Mines (8-5 overall, 5-3 RMAC).

"It's a huge game against a good team," Griego said. "Anytime you're playing on the road in the RMAC, it's a difficult test. It's going to take our entire team. It's all about rebounding from this loss, moving forward and staying positive."
