Skyhawks cap undefeated home stand with 83-66 win over Chadron State

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team added another impressive win to its resume on Saturday, leading wire-to-wire in an 83-66 victory over Chadron State College.

The victory for the Skyhawks (10-2 overall, 6-1 RMAC) moved them to 9-1 inside the friendly confines of Whalen Gymnasium so far this season and helped FLC keep pace with Westminster for second place in the RMAC standings.

FLC came out ready from the opening tip, jumping out to a 14-2 advantage on the Eagles (3-13 overall, 1-6 RMAC) through the game's first 4:32 and owning a 24-11 lead heading to the second quarter.

"We really wanted to speed up the game, come out really strong and aggressive, and make sure (Chadron State) had to respond to our energy and effort," said Fort Lewis head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "Our girls did a really good job of that."

Junior point guard Katrina Chandler, fresh off a career-high 21 points in Friday's victory over Metropolitan State University of Denver, continued her sensational weekend with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

The Durango native also did a stellar job quarterbacking the FLC offense, which shot 45% (33-of-74) for the game, as Chandler added a team-high five assists versus one turnover.

As a team, the Skyhawks committed just five turnovers through the game's first three quarters and finished the evening with a season-low nine turnovers.

"It's really good on our point guards, really good on our post players finding that extra pass or not taking that extra dribble," Griego said.

In the paint, the forward tandem of Jordan Vasquez and Jordan Carter exploited a smaller Eagles' roster as they combined for 33 points on 14-of-24 shooting.

Vasquez poured in a career-high 18 points off the bench and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Carter finished with 15 points and three rebounds.

"I just tried to be aggressive and credit to the guards; they were doing a great job feeding the posts inside," Vasquez said.

Fort Lewis held a 44-35 lead at the break and never allowed the Eagles to inch any closer than seven points over the final 20 minutes, limiting Chadron State to 39% shooting (25-of-64) and forcing 18 turnovers.

Junior guard Sydney Candelaria, who was Friday's hero with the game-winning layups against Metro State, added eight points and four assists on Saturday, while sophomore guard Alyssa Adams chipped in eight points, as well, in her six minutes.

Up next for the Skyhawks will be their longest road trip of the season as they prepare for a four-game road swing, starting next weekend with matchups against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines.

It'll be an important road trip for FLC as the team, originally preseason picked No. 11 in the RMAC coaches' poll, takes aim at being a top-tier power in the conference in 2020.

"What's most exciting is these girls have really worked their butts off…it's a credit to them for coming in and working extremely hard. And, obviously, it's paying off as of right now," said Griego, referencing the Skyhawks' spot in the RMAC standings. "We're going to continue with that. We have a small recipe of success and with the leadership we have right now; they're doing a great job holding everyone accountable."
