Skyhawks grind out 73-67 road win against Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colorado — Playing without senior guard Sydney Candelaria — and sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez limited to just seven minutes in the second half due to foul trouble  the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team grinded out a 73-67 road victory Saturday afternoon over Colorado Christian University.

It was an impressive first victory of the 2020-21 season for the short-handed Skyhawks (1-2 overall, 1-2 RMAC), who had four different players in double-figures to help shoulder the extra workload against the Cougars (0-2 overall, 0-2 RMAC).

"I'm just so proud of our team and the girls who played. The biggest thing we've been doing is working on ourselves and it was important to get in the win column. It shows our hard work is paying off," said FLC head coach, Orlando Griego. "We played without another one of our lockdown defenders and scorers (Candelaria). And our girls really responded well for having Jordan out of the game in the second half and being without Sydney. We rotated a lot of players in and out. At the end of the game, we had to rely on a lot of our experience. It was a really big team win (Saturday)."

Sophomore guard Alison Chanhthala, junior guard Alyssa Adams and senior guard Bailey Osmer were the trio that stepped up for the Skyhawks after Vasquez exited with her fifth foul at the 6:40 mark of the fourth quarter.

Adams poured in a career-high 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while adding three assists and setting another career-high with seven rebounds in her 37 minutes.

Osmer added 10 points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists — four coming in the first half — stepping into a playmaker role.

"Bailey was all over the place and that's huge for us," Griego said. "We needed someone to step up and she did that. She allowed the game to come to her, she was rebounding the ball, pushing it up and making good choices."

As for Chanhthala, the sophomore transfer saved her best for the fourth quarter as she scored 13 of her season-high 16 points in the final quarter to help FLC erase a five-point deficit. Her biggest basket came with 17 seconds remaining, burying a corner 3-pointer off an assist from senior Katrina Chandler that gave the Skyhawks a two-possession lead at 72-67.

"Alison really helped us out that second half when Jordan was down, scoring the ball and taking it to the basket," Griego said. "Credit to our team. We wanted to waste as much clock as we could and take that last shot. I thought Katrina did a great job sucking in that second defender on the drive and Alison shot the ball in rhythm. That was a really big shot for us."

Chanhthala's dagger thwarted any comeback hopes for the Cougars, who had been able to climb back into the game with a huge third quarter that saw CCU outscore the Skyhawks, 26-12.

"I think the biggest thing for us in that third quarter was our ball movement. For us to score, we have to have everyone involved, not rush our shots and have good shot selection," Griego said. "I thought for three quarters we did that in the first, second and fourth quarters. That third quarter got away from us, but we were able to keep the game close and gather our composure."

Aside from the third quarter, Fort Lewis dictated much of the action on Saturday. The Skyhawks shot 43.8% (28-of-64) from the floor and a season-best 9-of-22 (40.9%) from the 3-point line, while winning the rebounding (38-36) and turnover (16-14) battle.

FLC got off to a fast start behind a tremendous first-half performance from Vasquez, who scored 18 of her game-high 20 points and grabbed eight of her nine rebounds through the game's first 20 minutes.

Vasquez poured in 13 points in the first quarter to give the Skyhawks an 18-13 lead, which they'd extended to a 12-point advantage at 39-27 entering the halftime locker rooms.

"Jordan was very aggressive, going after offensive rebounds, posting up extremely hard and running the floor," Griego said. "She did a really good job on the block and our girls did a good job of getting her the ball when they could. Then there were other times where she just went after the ball and took it upon herself. It was really great to see."

Chandler scored six points and added three assists, while senior forward Chloe Warrington tallied her first six points of the season in seven minutes off the bench to round out the Skyhawks top performers.

Fort Lewis will look to build off the victory when it resumes its current four-game road swing next week with matchups against Regis University (6 p.m. Friday) and Colorado School of Mines (5 p.m. Saturday).
