FLC bats break out, team earns a split on Day Two of the Courtyard Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Fort Lewis College softball team earned a split Friday on Day Two of the Courtyard Classic, beginning the day with an 11-2 rout of Notre Dame de Namur before concluding the afternoon with a tight 7-5 loss to Western New Mexico University.

In Game One, the Skyhawks (1-2 overall) burst out for 11 runs on 12 hits and were a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts; tying the 2008 for the fourth most stolen bases in a single game in program history.

Ten different Skyhawks finished with at least one hit against the Argonauts (1-3 overall), led by junior outfielder Kylie Hefley, who was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and two stolen bases.

"I'm proud of the girls. We cut down on the strikeouts and were able to score some runs and we stole a lot of bases today," said FLC head coach, Ashley Reeves, who picked up her first career win as a collegiate head coach with the blowout."We were able to be really aggressive because we were on the bases. The girls kept hitting the gaps and we were able to make things happen. We put pressure on the defense and that's what can happen when you put pressure on a defense."

After leaving runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, the dam burst in the third as FLC plated five runs in the inning, courtesy of RBI doubles from junior outfielder Kylie Hefley, freshman pitcher Brianna Leavell, and a two-run double by junior catcher McKenna Hefley.

The Skyhawks followed that up with a six-run fourth inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead, which included a RBI single from sophomore infielder Mackenzie Parks and two-run single off the bat of Kylie Hefley.

"It was Kylie and the bottom of our lineup that really got us going," Reeves said. "That's always a good thing when that bottom-third of the order can make things happen and producing runs."

In the pitching circle, junior Emily Morris picked up the win in her first appearance of the young season, tossing three scoreless innings, recording one strikeout and inducing six groundballs.

As for Game Two, the Skyhawks put themselves in prime position early for a Friday sweep as they jumped ahead 5-2 over Western New Mexico (4-3 overall) through the first two innings.

All five runs for FLC came in the second inning via a RBI single from McKenna Hefley, a two-run double from junior utility player Taylor Beaman, and capped off by a two-run single by senior infielder Taylor Hollestelle.

Hollestelle finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a walk in Game Two.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, walks came back to bite them as FLC pitchers issued 10 free passes, including two run-scoring walks that jumpstarted the Mustangs' comeback in the top of the third inning.

"I told girls we have to be better as a pitching staff…We got in our heads a little bit and didn't hit our spots. When you have a lead like that, you have to capitalize and throw strikes," Reeves said. "We gave up too many walks and it's hard to win games giving up that many walks, especially when you walk in two runs."

One of the bright spots out of the pen for the Skyhawks on Friday was the work of Leavell as she worked 3.2 scoreless innings, didn't allow a hit and struck out five to lower her ERA to 1.11 in the early going.

Fort Lewis will look to close out the Courtyard Classic strong on Saturday with matchups against Montana State University-Billings (10 a.m.) and Northwest Nazarene University (3 p.m.)

"We'd love to walk away with two wins tomorrow and we want to see all three aspects of the game — pitching, defense and hitting — come together," said Reeves when asked about what she's looking for Saturday. "I feel like if you get two of the three, you'll have a chance to win. But we'd love to see all three aspects tomorrow. Now that everybody has played and seen the field, hopefully we can relax and just play some softball."
