Team effort lifts Skyhawks to 60-57 road win over Regis

DENVER, Colorado — Playing in a Monday matinee against Regis University, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team started the work week off it fitting fashion, grinding out a workmanlike 60-57 road victory over the Rangers.

Neither team held a lead larger than eight points and both the Skyhawks (3-4 overall, 3-4 RMAC) and the Rangers (2-4 overall, 2-3 RMAC) each took turns throwing jabs in a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes.

"It was all about responding. Basketball is a game of runs and how many runs you can put together back-to-back and how many can you stop," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "Regis did a nice job of making its own runs and us as a team had to adjust. Then there were a couple of times where we just had some girls take it upon themselves to make a play."

Griego applauded the complete team effort from the Skyhawks on Monday. FLC finished with a dominating 26-5 advantage in bench points and received key contributions from multiple players en route to their third victory of the young season.

Sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, scored a team-high 20 points and tallied nine rebounds; one shy of her second straight double-double.

She and senior guard Bailey Osmer powered the FLC offense down the stretch as Osmer scored all 14 of her points in the second half. Osmer added a season-high five rebounds, two assists and three steals in her 30 minutes off the bench.

"Bailey was a huge lift and scored the basketball for us in really key moments," Griego said. "We knew the emphasis moving forward (for other teams) is Jordan. She is dominant, plays tough and is hard to handle. But we need that other player to come in and do good things and that was Bailey (Monday). She was huge for us."

Trailing 45-41 entering the fourth, Fort Lewis came out of the break with a quick 6-0 burst, courtesy of a 3-pointer from senior forward Chloe Warrington and three straight points provided by freshman forward Ally Harvey to give FLC its first lead of the second half.

Junior guard Alyssa Adams added six points, including a buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the shot clock to extend FLC's lead to 59-55 with 1:04 remaining, while Warrington and senior Katrina Chandler each chipped in six points, as well.

Chandler stuffed the stat sheet Monday, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds from the point guard position and adding a season-high four steals.

"That's a senior right there with championship experience," Griego said of Chandler. "Katrina is the type of player who is always trying to find ways to get better and her performance tonight was awesome."

Regis had one final gasp to force overtime in the waning seconds, but the FLC defense was able to cover up two 3-point looks for the Rangers as Erin Fry and Tashika Burrell each had their potential game-tying shots draw iron.

"We knew Regis was going to get off a 3-pointer, but it was just about who and how well can we contest," Griego said. "We did a really good job on (Fry's 3-pointer). The ball got tipped out for an offensive rebound. Then in those final seconds, our girls were switching, did a really good job of communicating, staying in front and we were able to get a good contest (on Burrell's shot) at the buzzer."

The Skyhawks will look to build off of Monday's victory when they head back out on the road Friday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Colorado State University Pueblo.
