Nine different Skyhawks score in 57-52 road win against CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team notched its third straight victory Friday evening, using a complete team effort to topple the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves, 57-52, inside Massari Arena.

With the win, Fort Lewis (4-4 overall, 4-4 RMAC) got back to .500 and, defensively, has now held opponents to 57 points or less in all three victories during the current streak.

"We feel great. Our team has really come together as a unit and group these last few weeks," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "We set the tone from the jump and our girls never got complacent. We have some good momentum going and our last three wins have been team wins. Everyone is contributing right now and I'm very happy for our team."

Nine different players scored Friday for the Skyhawks, who shot a solid 42.9% (24-of-56) from the floor and 35% (7-of-20) from 3-point distance compared to 29.4% (10-of-34) and 7.1% (1-of-14), respectively, for the ThunderWolves (1-5 overall, 1-5 RMAC).

Senior guard Bailey Osmer poured in a career-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead all FLC scorers. Osmer added four rebounds and has now averaged 15.5 points per game over the last two Skyhawks' wins.

"One thing we talked about with Bailey before the game was that she was going to have a mismatch on the perimeter when (CSU Pueblo's) forwards had to come out on her," Griego said. "he did a great job taking what the defense gave her. She's been huge for us the last few games and we're excited to see her step into that role of being aggressive scoring the ball."

Osmer's biggest basket came with 30 seconds remaining, after the ThunderWolves cut FLC's 14-point lead down to five at 55-50. Facing an underneath inbounds play with 10 seconds left on the shot clock, senior guard Katrina Chandler found Osmer streaking to the basket for the dagger to put FLC up three-possessions at 57-50.

The assist was the team-leading fifth of the game for Chandler, who added five points and two rebounds in her 27 minutes.

"We knew there was going to be emphasis on the backside (by the CSU Pueblo defense), so we drew up a play to counter that and our team executed it well," Griego said of the inbounds play.

Sophomore guard Alison Chanhthala was the second Skyhawk in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while senior guard Sydney Candelaria and senior forward Chloe Warrington added seven points and six points, respectively.

Due to foul trouble, FLC sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez — an early candidate for RMAC Player of the Year as she is averaging 18.3 points and 8.4 rebounds through seven games— chipped in four points and two rebounds in 17 abbreviated minutes.

"Sharing the ball is really the key for us and we did a good job of finding the open player and making the right passes," said Griego about the FLC offense on Friday. "Credit our team for making shots early and setting the tone for the game. We continued to execute and make CSU Pueblo work on defense. We executed our game plan."

Fort Lewis will now have a week to rest up and prepare for a pair of home games against Colorado Mesa University (5:30 p.m. Friday) and Westminster College (4 p.m. Saturday).

Westminster (4-1 overall, 4-1 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa (8-3 overall, 8-3 RMAC) currently sit in second place in the RMAC standings.

"They're going to be some really tough games. But we're excited to have the chance to play against two of the best teams in our conference on our home floor," Griego said. "As long as our players are healthy, it's safe and the games can be played, we'll be ready to go play."
