Skyhawks, Tarnauskaite pick up win No. 1 in a sweep of Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team stepped off the bus energized and ready to play Thursday evening, making quick work of hosts Adams State University with a 25-14, 25-16 and 25-17 sweep inside Plachy Hall.

The victory was the first of the young spring season for the Skyhawks (1-2 overall, 1-2 RMAC), and the first of the young head coaching career of Giedre Tarnauskaite.

Fort Lewis was fresh off a four-set thriller against No. 19 Colorado School of Mines last Sunday and brought the same intensity into Thursday's bout against the Grizzlies (0-1 overall, 0-1 RMAC).

"The team kept talking this week about staying competitive and showing our identity on the court. They were hungry for a victory and it showed tonight," Tarnauskaite said. "I thought we had amazing energy."

The Skyhawks hit a scorching .302 as a team Thursday, producing 39 kills versus 10 errors on 96 total attempts. It was the highest hitting percentage for FLC since the team posted a .315 mark in a victory over Texas A&M International back on Sept. 13, 2019, and first sweep since Oct. 19, 2018 against Western Colorado.

Sophomore middle blocker Avynn La Rose got FLC started on the right foot in Set One, spiking down five of her seven kills in a 25-14 opening set victory.

Fellow sophomore middle blocker Rylee Johnson had five efficient kills on 10 attempts. But it was the Skyhawks' outside hitters that were learned on Thursday as senior Alexa Treguboff finished with a team-high 12 kills and junior Cameron Callahan joined her in double-figures with 11 kills.

"We have to be an offensive threat and I thought we utilized our strengths in the best way we could. It reflected in our game," said Tarnauskaite of the offensive output. "Having Alexa and Cameron perform well on the outside, it's exciting to see things coming along. Our middles have did very well in the pod last weekend, but I knew coming into this match that we were going to have to depend on our pin hitters. It's exciting to see us as an offensive threat across the front row. It gives us a lot of options."

Callahan was a defensive force for the Skyhawks, as well, adding nine digs and four total blocks, including three solo blocks.

In the back row, sophomore defensive specialist Kamryn Lopez paced all FLC players with 12 digs as the Skyhawks defense as a unit limited ASU to 23 kills on a .083 hitting percentage.

"One of the biggest things that stood out to me, defensively, was Cameron's blocking. She was able to shut down one of (ASU's) strongest outsides and that really helped us not only statistically, but also with building momentum," Tarnauskaite said. "I also thought Kam was great in the back row. Her passing and ball control kept us in the play a lot of times. I really wanted to give a shout out to those two for representing well on defense."

Junior setter Makena Ahuna posted her second straight double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs to round out the Skyhawks top performers.

Fort Lewis will now enjoy a weekend off before turning its attention toward a home pod against Black Hills State University (11 a.m.) and Westminster College (5 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 6 inside Whalen Gymnasium.

"This will be our first weekend off, so we're going to rest and recover then get back to work on Monday polishing up a few things," Tarnauskaite said. "We're very excited to be home, playing on our own floor and in front of our staff. Our players were in the locker room saying, 'We want a pod,' so I know they're excited to play more."
