Skyhawks Claim 4-1 Road Win Over New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team picked up a road win over New Mexico Highlands University by a score of 4-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis improves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC while Highlands drops to 0-5 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.

"Highlands does a really good job of squeezing the space and caught us offsides a number of times before we solved the problem. Our team was tough today and scored four goals," commented head coach Damian Clarke. "A couple players got their first career goals, so all in all today was a few steps forward. We will have another good week of training and get into the third week of RMAC games next Friday."

Shots were even for the match with both sides picking up 13. The Skyhawks held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goals. Sophomore McKenna Ford and freshman Sabrina Reyes each earned their first career goals in the win. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle added her second goal of the season while junior Madyson Barela picked up her team-leading fourth goal of the year.

The Skyhawks wasted little time to start the match, going up 1-0 in the fifth minute courtesy of a Swindle goal. Fort Lewis doubled up the lead in the 42nd minute behind Ford's first career goal. The goal was set up by a Highland's attempt to clear which resulted in heads-up play from the Skyhawks to get Ford one-on-one with the keeper.

The third goal of the afternoon came via a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Reyes found herself fouled in the box and set up the PK in the top left corner. The opposing keeper guessed left and Reyes went right, netting a goal for a 3-0 lead. Fort Lewis continued to dominate possession through the second half, and the team was rewarded yet again with the fourth goal of the day coming in the 68th minute. This time it would be Barela who placed one over the outstretched arms of the keeper. The Cowboys got one back in the 79th minute, bringing the score to 4-1, but the lead would stand as Fort Lewis ran out the clock on a road win.

Fort Lewis (3-4, 1-2 RMAC) will be back on the road for an RMAC contest against Colorado Christian University on Friday, October 8 for a noon start.
