Women's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Colorado Christian University on Friday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. The Skyhawks move to 3-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the RMAC while the Cougars lift to 4-4-2, 3-2-0 RMAC.

CCU had a dominant performance offensively, racking up 23 shots to just 11 for FLC. The first half was the difference with the Cougars outshooting the Skyhawks 13-1. FLC finished the game with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Three players picked up two shots for the Skyhawks with sophomore Elizabeth David's two shots on goal leading the way. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin collected two saves on the afternoon.

"That loss was painful...we obviously were missing something," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We came alive a bit in the second half, and the response was good. A few players led us with their energy. Katie Smith and Aubrey Swindle sparked that response, and Barela came in with effort to score a goal, but it didn't go our way today."

The Cougars held an offensive edge through the early goings, limiting the Skyhawks to just one shot through the opening 45 minutes of play. CCU managed to net its first goal of the half in the 25th minute when a throw in found the feet of Capri Dewing. Dewing saw herself surrounded by an onslaught of FLC defenders, but the team's leading scorer made something out of nothing and netted one bottom left for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars doubled the lead in the 31st minute, taking advantage of a free kick that found the head of Saige Stocke and dribbled past a diving Dunbabin.

In the second half, the Cougars picked up where they left off, registering their first shot in the 46th minute which sailed wide right. Senior Avery Lewis picked up her first shot of the match minutes later, but the opposing keeper corralled the drive and registered a save. CCU responded with the game's third goal, driving a curving shot from 25 yards out for a 3-0 edge in the 53rd minute of play. The Skyhawks had a pair of offensive looks from David over the following 10 minutes, but two saves kept the team off the board. FLC started to rack up the shots as time winded down, but nothing would go as the home team ran away with a 3-0 win.

"I have to put this on my back and get the team prepared for a tough game on Sunday," noted Clarke.

Fort Lewis (3-5-0, 1-3-0 RMAC) is slated for a Sunday showdown with Adams State University (1-7-0, 0-4-0 RMAC). First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field. Fort Lewis holds a 14-2-2 all-time record versus the Grizzlies and most recently took a 1-0 contest on April 8.
