Skyhawks Women's Soccer Plays to 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team competed in 110 minutes of scoreless Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference soccer action versus Adams State University on Sunday afternoon, settling for a 0-0 draw to wrap up the weekend road trip. Fort Lewis moves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the RMAC while Adams State's record shifts to 1-7-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in the league.

The Skyhawks held a 19-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal for the match. The game was physical from the start with the teams totaling 21 fouls. Freshman Gaby Meraz-Fishbein led the team with four shots (two on goal). Senior Katie Smith, junior Kinley Carter, and sophomore McKenna Ford also registered two shots on goal. Junior Katherine Dunbabin and sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for four saves in the shutout.

"Today was a much better game for us. Whatever part of the mentality that was missing on Friday wasn't an issue today," said head coach Damian Clarke. "The center of the pack played really well and we worked for a shutout defensively. This game was a small step forward."

The game was a defensive juggernaut from first whistle with the game's first shot coming in the 18th minute. The shot on goal from the Grizzlies was immediately saved by Dunbabin to hold things at zero. The Skyhawks saw their first opportunity in the 22nd minute, but the attempt from Meraz-Fishbein ended in a save for the opposing keeper. Smith got in on the action minutes later with a shot high right, but it would end in another save to preserve the stalemate. Ford notched the final shot on goal of the half in the 42nd minute, but another save sent the game into the second half scoreless.

The Grizzlies looked to find the go-ahead goal two minutes into the second half, but the shot rattled off the post to keep things knotted at 0-0. Smith tested to ASU keeper yet again, this time in the 52nd minute, but her fifth save of the match kept the tie intact. FLC picked up four more shots over the following ten minutes of play, bringing the shot total to 12 for the match, but solid defensive effort allowed the Grizzlies to maintain a scoreless affair. Junior Madyson Barela and Carter chipped in shots down the stretch as the Skyhawks continued to dominate the shot column, but overtime was in the cards as the contest continued to sit at 0-0.

Both teams kicked it into high gear on the defensive side of the ball with the first overtime period featuring just one shot. Credited with the attempt was freshman Danielle Gonzales who missed high in the 98th minute. ASU got the second overtime frame started with an early shot the sailed high. FLC echoed the attempt in the 103rd minute off the foot of Meraz-Fishbein, but the opposing keeper's 10th save of the match held the score at 0-0. Carter found an opening for her second shot of the day in the 105th minute, but it would result in another save for the Grizzlies. ASU picked up the contest's final shot in the 108th minute which went high as time expired on a hard-fought 0-0 draw.

Fort Lewis (3-5-1, 1-3-1 RMAC) looks ahead to a four-game homestand which gets started on Friday, October 15 versus Colorado Mesa University for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The all-time series sits at 6-2-4 with last season's meeting ending in a 1-1 draw.
