Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to (RV) Colorado Mesa University

DURANGO, Colo. – The visiting (RV) Colorado Mesa University Mavericks found a goal in the 73rd minute to claim a 1-0 win over the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks women's soccer team on Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis falls to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Colorado Mesa improves to 8-2-0, 5-1-0 RMAC.

"It's obvious that this is a talented team, and I thought we created a couple really good chances. Realistically, it's clear that this conference is tough to play in when a team that's 3-6-1 on paper has a team receiving votes in the national poll on their heels for periods of time," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Mesa does a great job with their mentality, and I also think that the way my players are competing considering the lack of result is noteworthy."

Fort Lewis held a 10-8 edge in shots for the match, including a 5-3 shots on goal advantage. Sophomore Julia Johnson and senior Katie Smith each tallied two shots for the match. Five different Skyhawks chipped in shots on goal. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum played all 90 minutes between the pipes and picked up two saves.

Freshman Gaby Meraz-Fishbein rattled off the first shot of the afternoon just 29 seconds into action, missing high but showing offensive-mindedness early. The Mavericks responded by holding possession for a good portion of the opening minutes, keeping the Skyhawks off their side of the pitch. CMU found a shot in the 14th minute which sailed just high of a sprawling Rosenbaum. CMU's second shot of the frame came just a minute later with another poke the floated over the goal.

Smith placed the contest's first shot on goal in the 24th minute when the senior booted a blistering shot from 25 yards out, but a stoic save preserved the 0-0 deadlock. The Skyhawks looked to have a chance to take an advantage into the break when a pass made its way into the box, but a redirected attempt kept things scoreless after 45 minutes of play. FLC held a 4-2 advantage in shots at the half.

CMU found the first shot of the second half, sending it high in the 46th minute. The Mavericks mimicked the attempt in the 52nd minute, placing one in frame, but a save from Rosenbaum held the match scoreless. Rosenbaum earned another save on a similar attempt in the 62nd minute. FLC had its most promising opportunity of the match in the 69th minute when a free kick found senior Maddie Allen in the box. Allen ripped a shot which deflected off the keeper right into the lap of Smith.

Facing defensive pressure, Smith sent another shot into enemy territory, but the boot missed high. CMU took the advantage in the 74th minute when an attempted clear found the feet of Lexi Newton in the top of the box. Newton remained composed under pressure and found the back of the net just outside the reach of Rosenbaum. The goal would prove to be the game-winner as time expired on a 1-0 result.

"I'm excited for what this program is building. We have a really talented group of soccer players on this field, and we keep getting better every outing. We've been building throughout the season, and I'm excited to see it all come together," concluded Clarke.

Fort Lewis (3-6-1, 1-4-1 RMAC) remains home for a Sunday slate with Westminster College (4-2-3, 1-2-2 RMAC). Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. at Dirks Field. The live video stream as well as play-by-play commentary can be found at https://rmacnetwork.com/flcskyhawks/?B=282253 .
