Women's Soccer Plays to Double Overtime Deadlock with Westminster College

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team battled to a double-overtime draw with Westminster College on Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) competition.

Fort Lewis moves to 3-6-2 on the year and 1-4-2 in the league while Westminster's record sits at 5-2-4 overall and 1-4-2 in the conference.

The Griffins held a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots for the match, but the Skyhawks were superior in shots on goal with six to the visitor's two. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle led the team with two shots, one of which was on target. Six different FLC players notched shots on goal for the match. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum held down the goalkeeper position, picking up two saves in 110 minutes of scoreless soccer.

"This was a game where we knew that our backs were against the wall since we really wanted to get a point out of this weekend," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We didn't play as well as we can, but the no quit energy was phenomenal."

The game's first shot on goal came in the 27th minute when senior Katie Smith sent a header toward the goal off a free kick. The opposing keeper charged the shot which rattled around the legs of several players before being safely corralled. Swindle found herself in perfect position inside the box in the 30th minute, meeting a cross with her head, but the attempt sailed over top of the goal. Freshman Sabrina Reyes and Swindle each picked up shots on target the wrap up the opening frame, but the score remained 0-0.

Sophomore Elizabeth David began the second half with a shot on goal off a free kick from 40 yards out, but a leaping grab resulted in a save. The remainder of the half was a defensive battle for both sides. The Griffins found a shot on goal in the 89th minute but Rosenbaum remained poised and earned the save as the game heading into overtime.

Junior Madyson Barela picked up her first shot on goal of the match in the 93rd minute, sending one toward net from 25 yards out and right into the lap of the keeper. The Skyhawks rattled off another shot in the 97th minute, this time off the foot of senior Danielle Lium, but another save sent the game into a second overtime period. The final overtime period was defense-heavy with neither side registering a shot as time ran out on a deadlocked final score.

Fort Lewis (3-6-2, 1-4-2 RMAC) will remain home next week, taking on Colorado School of Mines for a 3:00 p.m. start on Friday, October 22.
