Skyhawks Earn Reverse Sweep Win in a Thriller Over the Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team completed the reverse sweep over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-13) on Saturday night on the road. Sophomore Chay Swenson matched a career high with 20 kills to lead all players.

Fort Lewis improves to 4-10 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while UCCS drops to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the league.

"We needed this win. Our focus was to play into our strengths, and I really think we regrouped after those first two set," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I am so proud of the way that my players rallied around each other and played for the team. We made little changes throughout the match, and that ws the fuel that we needed throughout the match for our mentality and attitude."

The Skyhawks hit a season-best .268 for the match compared to .246 for the Mountain Lions. FLC posted 11 aces to just five for UCCS. Swenson's 20 kills led all players, followed by freshman Alexis Hobie 's 17 kill outing. Senior Avynn La Rose had 11 kills and three block assists. Senior Makena Ahuna coordinated the offense with 45 assists and eight digs. Junior Kamryn Lopez led the team with 19 digs.

"We had clutch players at different times during that match. Top to bottom, we had people contributing in big ways. The distribution was key for us to say ahead of their defense, and it showed in our numbers tonight," noted Tarnauskaite.

Set One (22-25)
UCCS kicked off the match by going up 7-3 on the Skyhawks. A service error and kill from Swenson brought the score to 8-5, but a five-point run extended the lead to 13-5. FLC rallied with a pair of runs off kills from Hobie and senior Cameron Callahan to see the score at 16-10. Another run, this time an eight-pointer allowed the Skyhawks to tie the game at 19-19. FLC saw its first lead of the set at 21-20 after an attacking error, but a 5-1 run closed out the set for the Mountain Lions.

Set Two (23-25)
Fort Lewis matched the UCCS run in the first set, going up 7-3 after a service ace from junior Joviana Romero. The Skyhawks held on to the lead through the middle of the set before a UCCS pursuit saw the home team ahead 18-16. The Mountain Lions continued to press, going up 24-20 to bring on set point. Fort Lewis scored three-straight to pull within one, but a big block ended the set in favor of UCCS.

Set Three (25-18)
The Skyhawks bounced back by going up 6-1 to start the third set. The run continued with the FLC squad seeing a 13-5 lead behind kills from Swenson and La Rose. UCCS earned a kill to bring things to 17-9 but a side out kill gave the serve back to the Skyhawks. The Mountain Lions began to chip away at the lead, dropping in a cross-court kill to see the score at 21-16. Despite the late pressure, the Skyhawks closed out the set with a kill from Callahan.

Set Four (25-22)
The score was close to start the fourth, but FLC benefitted from a run to go up 10-6. The Skyhawks held on to the lead, reaching 20-points after a Hobie kill. The Mountain Lions rallied with four in a row to pull within a point at 22-21. Kills from Callahan and freshman Natalia Lambos, in addition to a Lopez ace closed out the set in 25-22 fashion.

Set Five (15-13)
The deciding set started in back-and-forth action with FLC seeing a 4-3 edge behind a Swenson kill. Hobie and Swenson continued to be the hot hands for the Skyhawks, pounding away kills for a 6-4 lead. UCCS rallied to go up 10-9, but a service error allowed for another tied score. The Mountain Lions pulled ahead again, this time at 13-11, but FLC had something to say about the impending match end. Lambos and Swenson picked up kills, and Swenson and La Rose earned a dominant block to seal the deal on the reverse sweep.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"I'm so proud of the way that our attacked shined in different moments. Ahuna deserves a lot of credit for the way she commanded her setting position tonight and how she put her teammates in position to be successful. Our fans also deserve a shout out for coming out to support and creating a good environment for us on the road. Those are the little things that don't go down in the stat sheet but really effect a match."
