Skyhawks Volleyball Drops Three Set Match to (RV) Colorado Mesa

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team faced a formidable foe on Friday evening inside of Whalen Gymnasium, falling in straight sets to (RV) Colorado Mesa University (25-22, 25-16, 25-17).

Fort Lewis drops to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mesa improves to 10-4 on the year and 5-2 in the league.

"We need to find options in our offense. That has been a theme this season. We have improved in several categories, but the offense isn't there yet," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Our middles were challenged today, but we stayed aggressive and I was happy to see that."

CMU hit .288 for the match compared to .080 for FLC. Each team earned four aces on the night, but the Maverick's service pressure was a difference maker from start to finish—keeping the Skyhawks out of system for much of the match. Junior Rylee Johnson and freshman Alexis Hobie each contributed five kills, followed by sophomore Chay Swenson who had four. Freshman Natalia Lambos has 11 assists and junior Payton Harmann chipped in nine. Leading the team in digs was junior Kamryn Lopez who had eight.

Set One (22-25)
The match started on a good note with FLC taking a quick 4-0 advantage. From there, CMU stormed back to tie things up 9-9. The Skyhawks scored the next two after a pair of CMU miscues. The set remained close until a four-point run had the visiting team ahead 18-13. The Skyhawks pulled within a point at 22-21 behind a kill from junior Cameron Callahan, but the Mavericks closed out the set by a score of 25-22.

Set Two (16-25)
CMU saw an 8-3 lead to start the set before a kill from Swenson slowed down the roll. The Mavericks answered back with a 9-1 scoring run to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. FLC came back with four-straight late in the set courtesy of kills from Johnson, Hobie, and Lambos to see the score at 21-12. The Skyhawks battled back late in the set, but CMU's lead would be too much as FLC fell 25-16.

Set Three (17-25)
Another scoring run for the Mavericks highlighted the early points with the team going up 6-1. Senior Avynn La Rose and Hobie picked up kills to bring the score to 7-3, but another lengthy run had FLC behind 16-6. La Rose picked up another kill late in the set to pull FLC within nine, but three kills closed out the match for the Mavericks, 25-17.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"Our mentality needs to come out and dominate. The effort is there, we just need to come together and have an all-around performance. If we can do that, I know we can be successful going forward."
