FLC Volleyball Erased an Early Deficit to Claim a 3-1 Win Over Westminster College

DURANGO, Colo. – A balanced offense fueled the Fort Lewis College volleyball team to down Westminster College in four sets by scores of 14-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 in Saturday afternoon Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Fort Lewis improves to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC while Westminster drops to 3-13 on the year and 1-7 in the league. The win improves FLC's home record to 3-2 this season.

Fort Lewis hit .238 for the match compared to .099 for Westminster. Serve and pass was key to the match with the Skyhawks totaling 11 aces to seven for the Griffins. FLC's defense came to play, putting up 59 digs and six total blocks.

"Our setters did a great job today in trusting themselves to make the tough sets. When that happens, they put their attackers in positions to be successful. Today was a great example of taking risks and having those risks pay off," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite.

Freshman Natalia Lambos was perhaps the most clutch player on the court this match, starting the match at setter and transitioning into an attacking option as the match progressed. Lambos had a season-high 13 kills to go along with 17 assists and seven digs. Fellow freshman Alexis Hobie matched Lambos with 13 kills, hitting at a .346 clip. Senior Cameron Callahan was an efficient source of offense, going for six kills on 14 errorless swings (.429). Junior Kamryn Lopez led all players with 20 digs, followed by junior Payton Harmann with a 13-dig outing.

"I was really impressive with Lambos tonight. She was a true spark for the team today, and we needed it," acknowledged Tarnauskaite. "Her energy ignited the whole team and allowed us to play Fort Lewis volleyball."

Set One (14-25)
The match started on a good note with the Skyhawks going up 6-5 behind kills from sophomore Chay Swenson and senior Avynn La Rose. From there, Westminster saw a seven-point run to double up the lead. FLC responded with an ace from Lopez and a kill from Swenson to bring the score to 12-8. The visitors maintained the lead through the late points, going up 21-12 off a service ace. Junior Rylee Johnson and La Rose notched kills down the stretch, but the opener ultimately went to the Griffins.

Set Two (25-19)
Trailing by a set, the Skyhawks opened the second with a 6-2 advantage which was fueled by a spread offense. Westminster stormed back to take a 7-6 lead before a side out kill from Lambos had things tied up. The teams continued to take turns leading the set with nine tied scores highlighting the set. FLC found separation at 17-15 after an ace from Harmann. The Skyhawks went on to score five in a row for a 22-16 lead before a Westminster kill slowed the building momentum. FLC wouldn't be deterred, though, closing out the set with a Lambos kill to tie the match.

Set Three (25-20)
The third set mirrored the second with an early FLC lead being erased in a Westminster scoring run. The Skyhawks earned a run of their own with a pair of kills from both junior Joviana Romero and Lambos to go up 10-6. The lead held through the middle of the set when a handful of FLC errors allowed the visitors back into the set at 16-15. From there, FLC regrouped to go up 22-18 off a kill from Romero. A kill from La Rose brought on set point, and a Westminster error secured the win for the Skyhawks.

Set Four (25-13)
Once again, the Skyhawks kicked off the fourth set with a commanding 8-2 advantage. FLC countered each attempted surge from the opposition to see a commanding 17-9 lead. The Griffins found a side out point, but back-to-back kills from Lambos gave FLC a comfortable 20-10 lead. Westminster found another side out point off a kill out of the middle, but the Skyhawks answered with four points to bring on match point. Romero found space down the line on the right side for her ninth kill of the night to give her team the 25-13 win.
