Turnovers the Difference in 93-46 Loss to West Texas in Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic

11/26/2021 4:04:00 PM

Box Score CANYON, Texas – Turnovers plagued the Skyhawks in a 93-56 loss to West Texas A&M University in their Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic Opener on Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis falls to 1-4 on the year while West Texas improves to 3-5 overall.

"I need to do a better job of having our guards prepared for all the different coverages we see with ball screens," said head coach Taylor Harris. "We will have great film reviews and conversations about how to put us in better positions to ensure our turnovers go down. We have to credit West Texas as well, they did a good job being the aggressor today, and when you're the aggressor good things come your way."

Fort Lewis shot 27 percent (14-of-51) compared to 46 percent (36-of-78) for West Texas. The Buffs narrowly edged out the Skyhawks in rebounds with 45 to FLC's 42. Turnovers were a difference-maker in the contest with FLC committing 28 to just eight for West Texas. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams had a career-high 19 points in the contest to lead all players. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria followed with seven points and six rebounds.

"Adams had a great week of practice and played with confidence to her game today—I was really proud to see that," commented Harris. "She has been through a lot in her career and it is a testament to her perseverance to have a great day shooting like she did today."

"Kelsey is such a big part of what we do. Every night you know that you're going to get a great rebounding effort from her," noted Harris. "It wasn't her day on the shooting side of things, otherwise we would have surely seen a double-double from her."

Adams got her day started with a three to see the Skyhawks up 3-2 as the game got going. West Texas enjoyed an 8-0 to see a 10-3 advantage before Adams hit a free throw to slow the momentum. It was Adams again, this time with 4:12 to go, hitting a shot from deep to bring the score to 14-7. The Buffs echoed the shot with a three, followed by a free throw to extend the lead to 18-7. Candelaria dropped in a pair of driving layups down the stretch to get the offense clicking, but FLC found a 23-15 deficit heading into the second quarter.

Free throws from Adams got the second going, seeing the Skyhawks down 23-17 one minute into the quarter. The Buffs went up by 15 four minutes into the quarter before a Candelaria layup brought things to 33-20. West Texas reclaimed a commanding lead with a run to go up 43-20. Adams knocked down a three to 2:32 to go to get the Skyhawks' offense back in check. Sorenson contributed the final points of the quarter for FLC, dropping in a layup to send the teams into the break with a score of 50-26.

The Buffs got the third quarter started with a 12-0 scoring run before free throw from redshirt freshman Ava Strange drained a free throw with 4:41 to go. West Texas continued to command the quarter, taking a daunting lead after a pair of free throws had the score at 71-31. Redshirt sophomore Ember Cervantes dropped in a pair of free throws with a minute to go for her first points of the outing, and Adams rounded out scoring for the Skyhawks with a layup—seeing the score at 76-35 with one quarter to go.

Sorenson made a second-chance layup the kickoff the fourth with FLC trailing 79-37. Freshman Piper Terry had her first points of the game with just under five minutes to go to see the score at 86-40. Redshirt junior Brooke McGee knocked down her first three of the game with 3:32 on the clock, taking advantage of a turnover to bring in to 89-43. Terry mimicked the deep shot with 1:39 to go, but that would be the final made shot of the outing for FLC with time expiring on a 93-46 score.

Fort Lewis (1-4) returns to the hardwood tomorrow for an 11:00 a.m. slate with versus Southwestern Oklahoma State University (5-2). Tomorrow's meeting will be the first in program history.
