Tale of Two Halves Leads to 68-58 Loss to Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite 19-point performances from Sydney Candelaria and Kelsey Sorenson, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell in a 68-58 battle to Regis University on Friday night. Fort Lewis drops to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while Regis improves to 7-4, 3-1 RMAC.

"Tonight was the tale of two halves, and that's kind of sometimes how basketball is," commented head coach Taylor Harris. "We played great going into the half, and I thought we had a decent third quarter as well. One thing that we focused on at halftime was coming out and having a good third quarter because that has been tough for us this season, and I thought we had a pretty decent third quarter. In the fourth quarter they were making shots and we weren't—that kind of thing boils over and leads to the result we had."

Fort Lewis shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from three while coming away with 34 rebounds. The Skyhawks were 8-of-10 from deep in the first half, but adjustments from the Regis defense held the team without a three through the final 20 minutes of play. Regis shot 40.6 percent (26-of-64) from the field and 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from beyond the arc while tallying 49 rebounds (16 offensive).

Candelaria and Sorenson were the team's leaders with 19 points apiece, while Sorenson also led the way with nine rebounds. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams followed with seven points and five boards.

The Skyhawks built a 9-3 lead over the opening three minutes behind points from three different players. Regis cut into the lead, seeing the score at 12-11 in favor of Fort Lewis with 3:42 to play in the first quarter. Sorenson increased the advantage to four points behind a three pointer, and Candelaria extended the lead further with a layup with two minutes to go. The Rangers enjoyed a five-point run to end the quarter with FLC ahead 17-16.

The second quarter featured a scoring drought in the first two minutes before a three by Adams had the Skyhawks up 20-16. Regis countered with back to back layups to tie things up at 20-20 with 6:34 to go. Candelaria and redshirt freshman Claudia Vidal teamed up for three baskets from beyond the arc to bring back a Skyhawk lead at 29-25 with under four minutes remaining in the half. Regis shot back with a layup, but freshman Piper Terry got in on the three-point action with her first bucket of the game to find FLC up 32-25. The Skyhawks continued to lead for the remainder of the quarter, holding a 36-32 edge at half.

The tale of two halves kicked off right from the jump in the second half as the visiting team overtook the lead at 38-36 after three minutes of play. The teams traded the lead a handful of times over the ensuing minutes with neither side leading by more than one point. Candelaria and Sorenson did their best to keep the lead on the side of the Skyhawks, combining for four points in the final minute of play to give FLC a 48-47 lead. The Rangers dropped in a free throw in the final seconds of the quarter to send us to the fourth quarter deadlocked at 48-48.

Regis began the fourth quarter on a six-point tear to take a 54-48 lead before a Candelaria jumper slowed the roll. Shots continued to fall for the Rangers as the visitors built a 14-point lead over the following five minutes of play. Sorenson and Adams each chipped in two free throws to narrow the lead to eight points, but the Rangers countered with free throws of their own to carry a 68-58 lead to the buzzer.

Fort Lewis (2-9, 1-4 RMAC) remains home for a 5:00 p.m. Saturday slate versus Colorado School of Mines (9-1, 4-0 RMAC). The game will serve as the final outing of the 2021 portion of the team's season, with the next game coming on the road against South Dakota Mines on Tuesday, January 4th.
