Skyhawks get off to sluggish start at West Texas A&M Invitational

CANYON, Texas — The Fort Lewis College softball team got the 2021 season underway Saturday during Day One of the West Texas A&M Invitational, falling to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and No. 25 ranked Lubbock Christian University.

Fort Lewis (0-2 overall, 0-0 RMAC) began the day with a non-conference matchup against RMAC foe UCCS (1-1 overall), 0-0 RMAC), dropping a tightly contested 3-1 pitchers' duel.

Senior pitcher Mandy Lorenson was dealing early on, working out of jams and striking out eight batters in her 5.2 innings pitched.

FLC broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman designated player Brianna Leavell drove the first pitch she saw over the wall in left for her fourth career home run.

Unfortunately, Leavell's long ball was the only hit for the Skyhawks off UCCS starter Lexi Rayburn. With the offense stalled, UCCS was able to battle back with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to steal the 3-1 victory.

The FLC offense struggled to get going again in Saturday's nightcap against No. 25 Lubbock Christian, falling behind 7-0 through the game's first four innings en route to an 8-2 loss to the nationally ranked Lady Chaps.

Fort Lewis broke through in the fifth on a RBI groundout from sophomore outfielder Sloan Shotton that plated freshman Jadyn Gilley. The Skyhawks added an additional unearned run in the sixth inning when two errors by LCU, one at third baseman and on the return throw from right field, allowed junior Azalea Moore to cross the plate to make it 7-2.

Sophomore third baseman Jaden Blaise Redus was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles to lead the FLC lineup, while senior utility player Hannah Gondini and senior outfielder Shelby Hotchkiss each added singles in Game Two, as well.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back Sunday when it concludes the four-game tournament with matchups against Lubbock Christian (9 a.m. MT) and tournament hosts West Texas A&M University (11 a.m. MT).
