Four different Skyhawks scored in 4-1 road win over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado — Following back-to-back ties to begin the 2021 spring season, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team notched its first victory Saturday, rolling to a 4-1 road win against Adams State University.

Fort Lewis (1-0-2 overall) has one more non-conference matchup before diving into RMAC action against Western Colorado on March 28 and the young roster is gaining more and more confidence each day during its current three-game point streak.

"This was another game, in a sense, where we needed a result to keep feeling like we're taking steps forward and it was fun to see us play with a lead," said FLC head women's soccer coach, Damian Clarke.

Saturday's game got off to a bit of a frantic and disconnected start, but the Skyhawks quickly settled down and netted two goals within four minutes of each other.

Freshman forward Aubrey Swindle tallied her second goal of the season, finishing off an assist from Elizabeth David at the 19:39 mark. Senior midfielder Corinne Sanderson followed close behind with her first goal of the season.

"We're excited that the way we scored those goals are off things we've been working on in training in a variety of ways. Aubrey scored off a set piece and Corinne's goal was a great timed run in and a great finish," Clarke said. "Those goals allowed us to settle into the game. It wasn't under control until about the time Aubrey scored. Our shape began to look good and we were able to dominate the game."

Helping quarterback the Skyhawks' shape was senior midfielder Charlie Kaiser, who picked up her first point of the season assisting on Sanderson's goal at 22:51 of the first half.

"Between (junior) Katie Smith and Charlie Kaiser; Charlie played a heck of a game in terms of controlling the midfielder and where we wanted to play," Clarke said. "It was a great performance from the midfield and that allowed our back line to just clean up whatever little things the midfield missed."

As a team, Fort Lewis only allowed two total shots on goal and finished with a 20-5 shots advantage.

The heavy shot totals produced two more goals in the second half as sophomore Madyson Barela drilled her first goal of the season, third of her young career, in the 64th minute.

Adams State avoided the shutout with a penalty kick goal at the 70:21 mark, but the Skyhawks answered back when freshman Julia Johnson scored her second goal in as many games in the 83rd minute to put a bow on the victory.

"The quality of goals we've been scoring have been tremendous. I haven't had a team this capable of scoring a lot of goals in a long time," Clarke said.

Fort Lewis will look to keep the momentum rolling when it concludes its non-conference schedule next Friday on the road against Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks are coming off a 5-0 victory against Western Colorado last time out and the two nearby rivals battled each other to a 1-1 tie in the 2021 season opener back on March 7.

"Colorado Mesa is very good and I'm sure they feel they could have beat us in that first game of the year at their place," Clarke said. "But I really do think both teams have gotten better and I'm excited to see how we'll perform. It should be a good test for both teams."
