Skyhawks fall in Sunday doubleheader to Colorado School of Mines to open series

DURANGO, Colorado — Entering Sunday's series opening doubleheader, the Colorado School of Mines softball team was rolling, winners of six of its last eight. The For Lewis College softball team, due to Covid-19 related issues and weather delays in scheduling, were playing their first games in 21 days.

The red-hot Orediggers took advantage, taking the first two games of the series by final scores of 13-1 and 4-3 on a brisk afternoon at Aspen Field.

"It definitely sucked (three weeks without games), but we're not going to use it as an excuse because we're better than what we showed today," said FLC head softball coach, Ashley Reeves. "We didn't hit the ball the way we can hit. There was no excuse for how we swung the bats today and hopefully we can wake the bats up tomorrow."

Game Two

In Sunday's finale, the Skyhawks (4-10 overall, 4-6 RMAC) rallied back from a 3-0 early deficit to pull even with the Orediggers (12-10 overall, 11-7 RMAC) heading to the sixth inning.

Fort Lewis plated two runs in the home-half of the fourth when freshman Brianna Leavell tripled off the right-field wall, scoring junior McKenna Hefley who doubled in front of her.

Freshman utility player Cara Daugherty came in to pinch run for Leavell and scored one batter later when senior Shelby Hotchkiss lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing the Skyhawks back within one.

The Skyhawks scored the equalizer in the fifth when freshman infielder Jadyn Gilley launched a solo, opposite-field home run for a memorable first career hit, home run and RBI for the native of Surprise, Arizona.

"It was a huge swing and I'm really happy for Jadyn with what she did today," Reeves said. "She turned a double-play, was great defensively and the home run was huge. If we can play with the energy we had after she hit that home run, that's what we need throughout a whole game."

In the pitching circle, senior right-hander Mandy Lorenson was able to rebound from a 3-run second inning by the Orediggers to throw up four straight scoreless innings.

Lorenson, who entered the game with a sparkling .187 batting average against this season, limited Colorado School of Mines to four runs, two earned, and struck out six. Unfortunately, the four walks proved costly for the Skyhawks' ace, though.

Two walks and a hit-by-pitch aided the Orediggers' second inning rally, and a one-out walk in the seventh would prove to be the go-ahead run for CSM as Renata Boyd stole second and scored on a throwing error one batter later.

"I told Mandy during and after the game that she is better than most hitters she is going to face. But when she gets in trouble is when she walks or hits people," Reeves said. "We've got to contain that part of her game and challenge hitters to put it in play. That's what I tell her; 'Let them hit it and see what happens.' Her batting average against is fantastic, so batters aren't hitting her. But walks were what got us early and again in that seventh inning."

Game One

In the series opener, the two teams were tied 1-1 heading to the top of the third before the Orediggers broke the game open with a 5-run third and 5-run fourth innings.

Fort Lewis scored its run in the home half of the second on a bullet two-run double by junior catcher Taylor Beaman, scoring sophomore shortstop Courtney Huff all the way from first.

Unfortunately, the Skyhawks would be limited to four hits in Game One while the CSM offense produced 13 runs on 11 hits en route to the 13-1 victory.

"We didn't get to play into our game of being aggressive on the bases because we weren't getting on enough. We didn't get to do a long of the things we want to do, offensively," Reeves said. "We've got to get runners on and we need to score runs early in games."

Fort Lewis, which took three of four against the Orediggers in Golden last spring, will look to bounce back Monday when it wraps up the four-game home series. Game times are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Aspen Field.

"We're a good team. But we just need to figure out how to put it all together," Reeves said.
