Skyhawks split Sunday DH at Adams State, earning first series win of 2021

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball team accomplished its goal Sunday, splitting its final doubleheader of a four-game road series against Adams State University to notch its first series win of 2021.

Fort Lewis (4-8 overall, 4-4 RMAC) began the day with a disappointing 8-7 loss to the Grizzlies (1-8 overall, 1-6 RMAC), but stormed back in the series finale to earn an 11-4 victory to clinch a 3-1 series win.

"It was super important for us to win the series and we knew that," said FLC head softball coach, Ashley Reeves. "We kind of dropped the ball in Game One today. But came back and scored seven runs to start Game Two. We hit like we needed to, played defensive like we needed to and made pitches when we needed to."

Game Two

After dropping Game One, the Skyhawks made an emphatic statement in Game Two, batting around and scoring seven first-inning runs on seven hits to put ASU in a 7-0 ditch before stepping to the plate.

Freshman designated player Brianna Leavell started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score junior Kylie Hefley, who led off the game with a single; extending her hit streak to seven games and padding her 7-for-16 (.438) line during the series.

Senior outfielder Shelby Hotchkiss, junior catcher Taylor Beaman, sophomore shortstop Courtney Huff and junior Azalea Moore all produced RBI at-bats in the inning to get FLC off and rolling.

"The girls did a great job and that's what we told them between games. We said, 'Come out and show them who Fort Lewis is,'" Reeves said of the seven-run first inning. "We wanted to take the series and that's exactly what the girls did. I credit them for coming out swinging, executing and scoring runs. No matter who you're playing, if you can put a 7-spot up it's a little deflating for the other team."

The Skyhawks added an unearned run in the second, then closed the door for good on the Grizzlies in the seventh with three more runs on RBI from Moore — her team-high third RBI of the game — sophomore Sloan Shotton and Kylie Hefley.

Fort Lewis would finished with 13 hits — all singles – as it took advantage of a ASU defense that played back to take away extra-base hits on Sunday after the Skyhawks had peppered the gaps in Saturday's doubleheader sweep.

"Adams State's outfield played in on us a little more (Saturday), so we were able to have hits find the gaps and the fences are big out there at 225 feet all the way around. We were able to run the bases a little more yesterday, but today they played the outfield back," Reeves said. "They played 'no doubles' and kept the ball in front today, so we were hitting singles instead of finding the gaps. But the girls did a great job adjusting and playing small ball, offensively."

In the pitcher's circle, junior Emily Morris was able to shake off a three-run first for ASU to give the Skyhawks five strong innings en route to her first win of 2021.

Morris scattered eight hits and struck out three while not issuing a walk, while getting great defense behind her as the Skyhawks committed just one error in the ballgame.

"Emily gave up some runs early, but was able to stay focused, stay in the game and she did a great job for us," Reeves said. "I thought our defense played well behind her, running some balls down and making plays for her."

Kylie Hefley and McKenna Hefley each recorded two hits atop the FLC batting order, while senior second baseman Pilar Gutierrez (2-for-3), Huff (2-for-4) and senior utility player Hannah Gondini (3-for-4, 2 runs scored) helped pace a big day for the FLC offense.

"I was really excited for Hannah. We put her in that No. 5 spot for Game Two and she did exactly what we needed her to do," Reeves said. "She made things happen."

Game One

The Skyhawks appeared to be on their way to a Game One victory on Sunday, taking an early 4-0 lead through the game's first three innings, but a six-run fifth for the Grizzlies opened the door for ASU to steal Game One.

ASU plated three unearned runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead late in the ballgame, taking the lead on a three-run bomb from Sydney Muniz.
"Adams State started to hit the ball hard, we had some errors and the game just got away from us," Reeves said. "We were in a position to win that game, but then it seemed like anything that could go wrong did go wrong that inning."

Fort Lewis fought back with two runs in the sixth, via a home run from Leavell and RBI single by Beaman, and tied the ballgame with an unearned run in the top of the seventh. But the Grizzlies answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh, walking off with an 8-7 win on a bloop single to center from Muniz.

Leavell finished 2-for-2 with the home run — her team-leading fourth of the season — and Beaman went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI to lead the FLC offense.

Fort Lewis will look to build off the weekend's success when it returns home to host a four-game set against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, then 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Aspen Field.
