Skyhawks fall on the road to MSU Denver, snapping five-game win streak

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball entered Saturday's series against Metropolitan State University of Denver on a roll, winners of five straight games that catapulted the Skyhawks into sixth place in the RMAC standings.

Unfortunately for FLC, the hot streak was paused on a frigid day in Denver as the Roadrunners collected wins of 9-1 and 5-1, respectively, during Saturday's doubleheader.

Fort Lewis (12-18 overall, 12-14 RMAC) battled toe-to-toe with the third-place Roadrunners (20-8 overall, 18-6 RMAC), with one tough half-inning being the difference in each ballgame.

Game One

The Skyhawks struck first in Game One as McKenna Hefley, reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, smoked a leadoff double to left-center to start the second inning. She's move to third on a sacrifice bunt and trot home on the RBI groundout by senior second baseman, Pilar Gutierrez.

FLC held that 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the third when MSU Denver exploded for eight runs and five extra-base hits to take an 8-1 advantage. The Roadrunners would add a RBI groundout in the fourth inning to make it a 9-1 ballgame and held on for that final in five innings.

The Skyhawks finished with five hits as a team against a MSU Denver pitching staff ranked second in the RMAC with a team earned run average of 3.24. Metro State starter Darby McGhee picked up the win, going four innings and allowing three hits, to improve to 11-3 on the season; tied for the RMAC lead in pitcher wins.

FLC junior catcher Taylor Beaman paced the Skyhawks' offense as she was 2-for-2 with a double, improving her batting average to .318 on the season.

McKenna Hefley finished 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored, while senior Shelby Hotchkiss and junior Kylie Hefley each added singles atop of the FLC batting order.

Game Two

As they did in the opener, the Skyhawks would draw first blood, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of Game Two.

Kylie Hefley earned a one-out walk, stole second base and scored two batters later via a two-out RBI double off the bat of freshman infielder Jadyn Gilley.

Unfortunately, the Skyhawks' offense was unable to string more hits together with runners in scoring position (RISP) as they left two on in the first, and were unable to get the key hit in a bases loaded, two-out situation in the top of the third. FLC would leave eight runners on base for the ballgame.

In the pitching circle, senior right-hander Kendra Keahbone was perfect through the game's first three innings, retiring all nine batters she faced in order.

MSU Denver was able to pull even with a run in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a lead-off walk with a RBI single two batters later by Shelby Robb.

Robb would hit a two-run home run her next plate appearance in the fifth, capping a four-run inning for the Roadrunners to take a 5-1 lead.
The loss was just the first of the season for Keahbone (5-1), who was still solid as she held MSU Denver to six hits and walked just two in her six innings of work.

Offensively, the Skyhawks produced one run on five hits, led by Kylie Hefley as she went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Freshman first baseman Brianna Leavell added a single, while Gilley and Beaman each recorded hits to pace the Skyhawks' lineup.

The Skyhawks and Roadrunners will resume their four-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday with another doubleheader, hosted at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver.
