Skyhawks capitalize on late set piece to earn 1-0 road win over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado — Entering the final stretch of the 2021 spring season, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team was able to grind out a 1-0 road victory and collect three key points over Adams State on Thursday.

Fort Lewis (4-1-2 overall, 3-1 RMAC) defeated the Grizzlies (1-4-0 overall, 0-3-0 RMAC) by a 4-1 final score in a non-conference matchup back on March 20, but Thursday's rematch featured a few new curveballs from the Grizzlies.

"Once again, I thought it was a really mature performance from us," said FLC head women's soccer coach, Damian Clarke. "I thought Adams State played extremely well, made some tactical changes and did a very good job of staying compact and making it difficult on us."

The Skyhawks, who finishing with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, were able to break through the clutter in the 70th minute when freshman forward Aubrey Swindle headed a corner from senior Corinne Sanderson to break the scoreless tie.

It was the third goal of the spring for Swindle, tying her for the team lead with Sanderson, who added her second assist of the season in the victory.

"We walked away with a goal on a set piece, which felt like how the game was going to be decided," Clarke said. "We worked hard on set pieces (Wednesday) and at the end of the day we felt like we hadn't performed as well on set pieces as we should. A bit of fortune from the service is sometimes all you need. Aubrey was able to take a couple steps back, attacked the space in front of her and the ball was right there for her. She did a great job putting her head on it in a very congested area."

Fort Lewis finished with a 10-3 shots advantage — 4-0 in shots on goal — in what was a near flawless defensive effort, minus two shots the Grizzlies were able to ring off the posts.

"I thought we played very well, defensively, but there were a few one-off chances (ASU) had that were well hit," Clarke said. "But for the most part we defended extremely well, kept them in their half, won the ball in the air a little bit better than we have been."

Leading the defensive charge for FLC on Thursday was true freshman Audra Sumetz, as well as a pair of upperclassmen midfielders in junior Katie Smith and senior Charlie Kaiser.

"Audra headed the ball really well and I thought Katie was phenomenal today," Clarke said. "She shut down so many attacks before they got into our back line. Charlie, again, was just very consistent and those were the players who probably stood out the most (defensively)."

Fort Lewis will look to build off the positives Thursday and hunt its third straight win this Sunday when it hosts Colorado Christian University in the final RMAC regular season game of the spring. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Dirks Field

As of Thursday, the Skyhawks sit third in the "Mountain Division" of the RMAC standings with nine points, on the heels of CSU Pueblo (10 points) and Colorado School of Mines (13 points). The top-four teams in each division will make the 2021 spring RMAC Tournament, with the top-two seeds in each division hosting a quarterfinal.

"It's a critical game in terms of finding our seeding inside the RMAC Tournament," Clarke said. "I thought today was a pretty complete performance. If we have energy and play a similar complete performance, I think we'll continue to get better Sunday. That's been the goal to get better every game and I feel like we have."
