COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) released the women's lacrosse All-Academic teams on Wednesday, with seven total Fort Lewis College student-athletes earning academic honors.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters. First Team All-Academic members were voted on by the conference's sports information directors for meeting those criteria as well as demonstrating outstanding performance on the field.

All student-athletes that meet those requirements, but were not named First Team, automatically qualify for Honor Roll.

Senior attacker Abby Escandon garnered First Team All-Academic recognition, posting a 3.74 accumulative GPA as a Sports Administration major.

On the field, Escandon had a career season, as she scoring a career-high 31 goals in 2021, which shattered her previous high of 11 set in 2019. She tied for the fifth most goals in the RMAC this season and will graduate from FLC ranking ninth in career points (82), sixth in assists (27) and 11th in goals scored (55).

The Skyhawks also placed six student-athletes on the All-Academic Honor Roll in senior Ann Nelson, juniors Maren Clark and Jillian Byron, sophomores Averi Basso and Makena Carter, and redshirt freshman Rebecca Kiyokawa.

Nelson also had a career senior season for the Skyhawks as the midfielder was second on the team in scoring with 27 goals en route to being named First Team All-RMAC. She led the squad with 11 free position goals and 45 draw controls; the fifth most in a single season in program history despite FLC not playing a full schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She entered the spring with a GPA of 3.73 as a Public Health major.

Clark, in her third season as a full-time starter, also produced career highs across the board in goals scored (21), assists (3), shots (42), ground balls (17) and draw controls (32) in 12 games played. Academically, she boasts a 4.0 GPA as a Business Administration major.

Byron was an impact defenseman off the bench for FLC in 2021, playing in 10 games, including two starts, and scoring her first career goal. Defensively, she tallied three caused turnovers and scooped up a career-high 14 ground balls. Academically, she entered the spring with a 3.93 GPA double majoring in Sports Administration and Psychology.

Basso, in her first year as the full-time starting goalkeeper, finished with 106 saves in 12 games (2nd most in RMAC) while anchoring a FLC defense that helped the Skyhawks to their first RMAC Tournament berth since 2018. She earned Second Team All-RMAC and, academically, she owns a 3.97 GPA as a Psychology major.

Carter started 10 of 12 games for the Skyhawks during the spring, scoring five goals on five shot attempts, while adding 11 ground balls and four caused turnovers from the midfield. She entered the spring with a 3.39 GPA as a Psychology major.

As for Kiyokawa, she shined on the defensive end of the field in her first full-time season, earning First Team All-RMAC honors. She led FLC with 16 caused turnovers and 41 ground balls; the second most in the RMAC during 2021. Kiyokawa was equally as impressive in the classroom, entering the spring with a 3.97 GPA as a Public Health major.
