Women's lacrosse plays final home games this week, welcomes #18 Regis and UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team is set to play its final home games of the season this week with a Thursday and Friday split against No. 18 Regis University and UCCS.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks suffered a pair of losses at home to Westminster University and Colorado Mesa University. On Friday, Fort Lewis took on Westminster in what would be a 20-8 final score. The Griffins held a 41-18 advantage in total shots, including a 31-12 edge in shots on goal. Westminster also led in draw controls (21-8) and ground balls (22-19) while committing three fewer turnovers than the Skyhawks.

On Sunday against Colorado Mesa, Fort Lewis dropped a 15-2 result. Fort Lewis was outshot 44-13, including a 30-9 margin in shots on goal, and committed 28 turnovers compared to 15 by the Mavericks. Colorado Mesa capitalized on free-position opportunities, converting eight of 16 chances.

Scouting No. 18 Regis
The Rangers come in at No. 18 in the latest national poll, down one spot despite a four-game winning streak. Regis enters Thursday's game with a 7-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in conference play. One of the team's wins came over Fort Lewis on March 22 in Denver where the Rangers outscored the Skyhawks 18-1.

Regis averages 25.5 shots per game to go along with a .829 shots on goal percentage. The team has compiled 205 ground balls, 115 caused turnovers, and 112 draws.

The team's high-octane offense is highlighted by two players with 30-plus goals. Lexie Springman leads the team with 31 goals, followed by Maggie Schipfer with 30 to her credit. Three additional players have double-digit goals this season. Kyla Bieker is the leading assister with 10 this season. Sophia Katnick leads the squad with 33 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Brigit Goetsch is the leading goalkeeper with seven wins, a .498 saves percentage, and a 10.88 goals against average.

Scouting UCCS
The Mountain Lions sit at 5-5 this season with a 3-2 mark in conference play. Last week, UCCS earned a split with a win over CSU Pueblo (17-12) and loss to Regis (13-8). Fort Lewis fell to the Mountain Lions by a 22-7 final when the teams met on March 20.

This season, UCCS is averaging 29.4 shots per game with a .714 shots-on-goal percentage. The team has totaled 118 goals and 54 assists. Additionally, the Mountain Lions have compiled 237 ground balls, 129 draw controls, and 62 caused turnovers.

Individually, the team is led by Ella Mills and Sofia Watts with 27 goals apiece. Two additional players have double-digit goals this season. Allie Schell leads the team with 13 assists. Five players have double-digit draw controls, led by Jade Wilson with 39. Charlotte Fannin leads all players with 29 ground balls, followed by Peyton Ross and Delaney Gnos with 21 each. Gnos is the primary goalkeeper with 10 starts, 13.51 goals against, and a .390 saves percentage.

Defensive Dandies
Fort Lewis has been led by its defense through seven games with the team ranking fourth in ground balls per game (23.00) and second in caused turnovers per game (11.60) in the conference standings. Much of that prowess runs through seniors Sydney Tannaci and Samantha Rodgers. Tannaci ranks first in the RMAC in ground balls per game (4.00), followed by Rodgers in second with 3.71 per game. Rodgers is second in the league in caused turnovers per game with 4.57.
