DURANGO, Colo. – The Skyhawks women's lacrosse team closed its home stretch with a 15-2 loss to Colorado Mesa University, dropping to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Fort Lewis was outshot 44-13, including a 30-9 margin in shots on goal, and committed 28 turnovers compared to 15 by the Mavericks. Colorado Mesa capitalized on free-position opportunities, converting eight of 16 chances.
Junior goalkeeper Olivia Tilbury recorded a career-high 15 saves while adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Samantha Rodgers led the defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Seniors Diamon Velasco and Marissa LaCivita scored the Skyhawks' two goals, with junior Piper Price assisting on both.
After a scoreless opening four minutes marked by turnovers on both sides, Colorado Mesa broke through with a free-position goal at the 10:31 mark of the first quarter. The Mavericks added two more goals late in the period to take a 3-0 lead.
A series of cards against Fort Lewis in the second quarter created multiple woman-up opportunities for Colorado Mesa, which capitalized to build a 7-0 lead at halftime.
The Skyhawks ended their scoring drought midway through the third quarter when Price found Velasco in front of the net. LaCivita added another goal at the 5:25 mark on a woman-up opportunity, again assisted by Price. However, the Mavericks closed the game on a 6-0 run to secure the 15-2 final.
