Women's Soccer Overtime Battle Goes to ThunderWolves in RMAC Opener

DURANGO, Colo. – It took 98 minutes for a winner to be decided at Dirks Field on Friday afternoon, but the Fort Lewis Women's Soccer team ultimately dropped a 2-1 decision to Colorado State University Pueblo in the Rocky Mountains Athletic Conference opener. The overtime effort was the first of the season for both programs.

Fort Lewis moves to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 to start RMAC play while CSU Pueblo improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.

"I thought we came out playing really good soccer. We created a lot of good opportunities for ourselves and probably should have put up a few more goals. We missed a couple of opportunities that could have changed the game, but we are still getting better and better every outing," commented head coach Damian Clarke. "Pueblo's record is deceiving, they have lost to some really tough teams to start the year, so realistically this is a talented team that we lost to and we are going to keep getting better."

The Skyhawks edged out the ThunderWolves in shots, 17-10, and shots on goal, 11-6. Fort Lewis came away with five corners on the match, one of which set up the game's first goal, while CSU Pueblo had three. Senior Casey Flynn picked up the lone goal for the Skyhawks, marking the first of her Fort Lewis career. Junior Madyson Barela led all players with eight shots, five on target, and was followed by freshman Sabrina Reyes who totaled three shots (two on goal). Junior Katherine Dunbabin earned four saves in 96 minutes of action between the pipes.

"We knew that we had a very capable team heading into today's game. Our mentality has always been next man up soccer, and our athletes are all willing to do their jobs," added Clarke. "At the end of the day, when some of your key players aren't on the field it will take some serious fortitude to replace that. I was proud of the way our players stepped up today."

Fort Lewis set the tone to start the match, sending a pair of shots toward the opposing goalkeeper in the opening three minutes. The Pack found the first tester of the frame, sending a shot toward Dunbabin who notched her first save. The Skyhawks earned a trio of corner kicks in the 36th minute, and the final of the flurry resulted in the game's first goal. Barela lined up for the set-piece, sending a perfectly placed dime toward a cluster of players. The ball found the head of Flynn who poked it past the sprawling keeper. The lead stood as the contest moved into the second half.

The ball remained in control of the Skyhawks for much of the second half, but CSU Pueblo found an opportunity and capitalized in the 61st minute. The Pack's forward managed to beat the Fort Lewis defense laterally, positioning herself perfectly to boot a shot top left past a diving Dunbabin. Fort Lewis had a handful of opportunities to close out the contest down the stretch, but the CSU Pueblo defense held true, moving the game into overtime action.

Defense was the name of the game in extra time with both sides working to keep their teams in the match. Barela put up the period's first shot, and senior Maddie Allen followed with a shot in the 95th minute, but neither would go, keeping things at 1-1. The tie would finally break in the 98th minute when CSU Pueblo's Cara Siegel found her second goal of the match. Siegel caught a cross from the far side of the field and chipped it past a handful of defenders to put the nail in the coffin.

Fort Lewis (2-3, 0-1 RMAC) is set to welcome No. 6 University of Colorado Colorado Springs (6-1, 1-0 RMAC) to Dirks Field on Sunday. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m. UCCS opened RMAC play with a 4-0 win over Western Colorado.

"Sunday's match will be an opportunity for us to test ourselves against one of the best in the country. At the same time, we go into every game we play with the expectation of winning, and our players are going to apply pressure from first whistle," noted Clarke.
