Skyhawks Fall 4-1 to No. 6 UCCS in RMAC Action

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 6 University of Colorado Colorado Springs at Dirks Field in Rocky Mountains Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on Sunday afternoon.

Fort Lewis drops to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC while UCCS improves to 7-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.

The Mountain Lions were offensively dominant with 23 shots to FLC's six. Of the 23 UCCS shots, 12 were on target compared to three for the Skyhawks. UCCS held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks for the match. The lone goal for the Skyhawks came from junior Ariel Lopez, marking the first of her Fort Lewis career. Senior Skylar Byrnes picked up the assist on the play, marking the first of her career. Junior Katherine Dunbabin was active between the pipes, picking up seven saves in 72 minutes of action.

"A few mistakes were the difference in that match. Against a very talented team you need to be able to go long periods of time without stepping on your own toes," said head coach Damian Clarke. "In my eyes, it looked like we could have scored more than one goal today. We could have made things more difficult for UCCS today, but that was a good team we faced, and this match made us better."

Solid defense on both sides had score knotted at zero through much of the first half, but the Mountain Lions couldn't be tamed for long. The visitors took a 1-0 advantage in the 34th minute when a long pass found the UCCS forward in a one-on-one battle with the defender. Dunbabin charged, looking to apply pressure, but the crashing attacker sliced one out of reach to the left corner for a 1-0 edge. The one-goal advantage remained heading into the second half.

The Mountain Lions doubled the lead in the 47th minute when a set-piece found the foot of reigning RMAC Player of the Year, Tarah Patterson, who placed a long shot top left for her fourth goal of the season. The visitors found a third goal in the 69th minute, going up 3-0, with a shot finding the back of the net just out of the reach of a sprawling Dunbabin. The three-goal deficit didn't last long as Lopez found herself in perfect position for her first career goal just 16 seconds later. The goal was created when Byrnes sent a pass off the fingertips of the opposing keeper, and the deflection fell at the feet of Lopez who remained poised and chipped one in for a 3-1 game. The Mountain Lions responded with a goal in the 83rd minute to go up 4-1 which marked the final score as time expired.

"Today I think we grew in confidence knowing that we can play and compete against good teams. We can win the ball in high areas with the press, and we are only going to get better as the season continues," noted Clarke.

Fort Lewis (2-4, 0-2 RMAC) will be on the road for a conference matchup with New Mexico Highlands University on Friday, October 1 for a 2:00 p.m. start. The Skyhawks own a 15-2-3 all-time record against the Cowboys, including a four-game winning streak dating back to a 2-1 home win on September 18, 2016.
