FLC Women's Soccer Opens Season With a 4-1 Loss to West Texas A&M

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team got its 2021 campaign started on Friday afternoon with a non-conference match against West Texas A&M University. The Skyhawks battled from start to finish on their home field but ultimately fell by a final score of 4-1.

West Texas A&M improved to 1-0 on the year while Fort Lewis dropped to 0-1. The Lady Buffs held a 15-11 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Senior midfielder Katie Smith led the team with three shots and accounted for the team's lone goal. The goal marks the sixth of Smith's career and was assisted by fellow senior Maddie Allen—the first of her Skyhawk career. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin collected four saves in 90 minutes of action between the pipes.

"I think our fight was good. We were playing against a very talented team, but we are capable of competing, and I think our team is starting to realize that," said FLC head women's soccer coach, Damian Clarke. "We had good moments and bad moments today, but it's all about growing."

The defense shined early for both squad as the game's first shot wouldn't come until the 17th minute. The delay in offense was made up for when a pair Lady Buffs rifled shots at starting goalkeeper Dunbabin who collected her first saves of the year. The scoreless action wouldn't last much longer as WT's Emily Avila found the go-ahead in the 22nd minute. The junior lined up a free-kick just outside the box and sent the ball through a flurry of players and just out of Dunbabin's sprawling reach for the 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks started to pick up the pace, notching their first shot of the match in the 33rd minute when a header from Smith was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. The shots continued to pour in for the home team as the Skyhawks added to the shot column heading into halftime, but none would find the back of the net, keeping the score at 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.

The Lady Buffs wasted no time coming out of the break with the second goal of the game doubling up the lead less than a minute into the new half. Fort Lewis looked to have eliminated the threat after the initial shot was craftily blocked by Allen, but the bounce went the way of WT's forward Reagan Matacale who chipped it in for a 2-0 edge. Moments later the Skyhawks would capitalize on a yellow card that placed Allen just past the midfield line. The senior sent a shot toward the goal, pulling WT's keeper out of position which allowed Smith to chip in her first goal of the season, bringing things to 2-1 with 43 minutes to go.

WT added insurance to the lead in the 52nd minute when the team's foremost scoring threat Hannah Kelley-Lusk found herself one-on-one inside the box. Dunbabin made a gritty diving attempt, but the ball eventually found the back of the net for a 3-1 advantage. Fort Lewis played tough down the stretch, limiting the Lady Buffs to three shots through the middle of the second half, but the visiting defense stayed true, holding the Skyhawks to just two shots through the middle part of the second half.

Kelley-Lusk would eventually add to the WT lead with her second goal of the match to bring things to 4-1 after 82 minutes of action. Fort Lewis added three additional shots in the final minutes, including a shot on goal from sophomore forward Aubrey Swindle, but the lead proved to be too much as the clock ran out on a 4-1 loss.

"We are still figuring out our style of play. As a staff, we are trying to figure out how to get the best out of our players, but we know that the talent is there," noted Clarke. "A 4-1 loss doesn't mean a whole lot at the beginning of the season if it proves to make us better toward the end."

Fort Lewis (0-1) will take to the pitch again on Sunday when the team welcomes Texas Permian Basin (0-0) to Dirks Field for an 11:00 a.m. start. The live video stream can be found at https://rmacnetwork.com/flcskyhawks/?B=282253 .
